Effective but probably not for everyone
I was quite apprehensive about this product and I didn't have very high expectations but, for the price, I thought it was worth a try.It turned out to be much more effective than I had hoped and easier than just using a fork. I especially chose a product with tapered cutting ends. This one does and it is absolutely essential. The plugs have to be smaller diameter than the rest of the cylinder or they will always stick.I gave it 5 stars overall because it worked for me and better than I expected. Here are a few tips and comments I think might be valid. My soil in the grassed area is heavy and prone to waterlogging so it really needed aeration.1. Some forethought and preparation would probably be useful - not that I had done any. That means cutting and scarifying the grass beforehand - if you can. The ground also needs to be well wetted. I can't imagine how hard it will be on dry, stony soil - but then aeration might not be so important,2. It is hard, slow work so be prepared and don't expect to complete a large area in one go.3. Press down hard and move the tool from side to side as it cuts down but be careful not to overstress the welds.4. You will need something to clear the cutting cylinders. I used a the handle of a long plastic spoon with the end cut square as some will get clogged from time to time. It is essential not just to make a hole but to clear ALL the soil stuck to the inner surface or it will just clog up again immediately. Someone had suggested using an electric drill but that won't clean the inside properly so it will just be a waste of time.5. I also had a trug of water handy. Sometimes just clearing the clogged cylinders is enough but you may also need to clean out the holes with water. A bottle brush of the right size would be handy but I just used my plastic handle.6. Clean and dry the tool properly after each use. I didn't find WD40 to be necessary if you dry it carefully afterward (I put it in the airing cupboard).7. If the cutting ends get blunt, they can be sharpened with a file.8. I had to collect up the plugs - and there are a lot of them, because:

Don’t waste your money
Where do I begin with this.I thought from reading the reviews that this would be a decent bit of kit. But for £24.99 I think I’d have expected a bit more. The welds are just bad tack welds and the angle steel for the foot plate is very thin.My garden which had been heavily watered for a few days previous as this seems to be the recommendation when doing this type of aeration. The soil was soft and the tines went into the ground with ease. I thought I’m onto a winner here. Then approximately ten goes into the job and the first tine snapped at the weld. At this point I thought I’d just get in contact with Amazon and get them to send a replacement. But as the I wanted to complete the job this weekend I decided to weld the tine back to the angle steel. This worked for about 5 more goes before another snapped. At this point I decided to weld all of the tines. This seemed to do the job as I welded fully around the tines. This in itself was a bit of an effort as the steel is of such a thin gauge. Anyway determined to get the job done and proud that I made do and mended it I carried on. Within 15 minutes the foot plate which you need to put your weight onto snapped at the weld on the handle. I’m not a big man. I weight just over 80kg so I was hoping that a tool made to go several inches into the ground using force and weight would carry said force and weight. Alas it wasn’t to be so I went back to welding.I carried on with no further mishaps but I would say that the thing is now more weld than aerator. So unless you have access to a welder or have the softest ground in the world I’d steer clear of this product.

Works ok ...
Arrived quickly, as described. I bought it to use on a small lawn. It works to a point. If the ground's too wet the dirt gets stuck in the tines. If it's too dry, the ground is too hard and it can be difficult too push the soil through. It does not like to hit stones. Each time you push down into the soil, holes are made in the lawn, and the removed soil pops out the top of the open tine the next time you push it into the soil. You should rake these up if you want to be neat. :-)I persevered with it and managed to aerate the lawn successfully and it has made a positive difference to its appearance. You don't notice the holes at all after a very short time. It is slow going and as others have mentioned it is hard work. In the end I learnt that you must keep the tines sharp for it to work at its best. Have a round metal file to hand and use it on the internal edge of the bottom of the tines regularly. That makes a massive difference. I also would recommend paying close attention to when the soil is not pushing up through any of the tines and clearing the blockage soon. In the process I did lose one of the tines, but I intend to get that welded on again. Overall it's a decent enough product. It could be more sturdy, but it did my job, I was careful, and I'll use it again. So that says something for it.

You get what you pay for....
Had this delivered today as my lawn was a bit shocking! Scarified the lawn and then aerated using this aerator. My lawn is about 35m2 so not big, by about 3/4 of the way through I noticed that the tines had started to bend. The ground was reasonably soft so the aerator wasn't working hard or being particularly pulled about. I straightened the tines and carried on, but they were bent again fairly quickly. I managed to complete the garden but don't think I will get another full use out of it. But for the money, it did what I needed right now. I would say the angle steel the tines are welded to is too thin.
