do the speakers have a inbuilt amplifier?

Yes they're powered by a 40w built in amplifier.

Does each speaker require a seperate mains connection, or does only one plug in to mains?

Only one speaker requires to be plugged into the mains.

Will this amplify microphone input?

Not really.....The output from a mic is too weak by itself. All amplified speakers are designed for a true line input that at least has already passed through a pre-amp stage. So buy a mic pre-amp then its output should be fed to the speakers.

how many aux ports are needed if connecting both speakers to the same device

The speakers are connected to each other and the main speaker to your equipment
