Sony MDR-EX650AP Premium Wired Earphones with Brass Housing, Neodymium dynamic drivers, Smartphone Mic and Control - Black/Gold

I swithered a long time before deciding to spend £50 on a pair of in-ear headphones. I had read the What HiFi reviews for these (2014 award winners £50-100) and the cheaper Sound Magic E10s (also What HiFi award winners under £50) and poured over other Amazon reviews. A friend opted for the Sound Magic but was I put off by the quite large microphone piece on the cord. The one on these is much smaller. I have a proper separates HiFi at home and have always enjoyed sitting listening to music but most of my listening these days is on the go so it was important that I got the right decision. Having used these for a few days I am confident I made the correct choice. First thing....don't open the box, plug them in and expect to hear them at their best. Spend a bit of time ensuring you select the best fitting silicone rubber buds. This isn't just down to comfort, the better the fit not only serves up better sound isolation from outside but it also helps tune the sound giving a fuller bass without ever swamping the rest of the music. Also I chose to plug them into my HTC One phone and left them playing on repeat for about 6 hours before actually sitting down to listen to them. I think that helped soften any initial sharpness. So on to the listening...I have a 32GB micro sd card in my phone so am not short of storage space. For that reason I like to rip or download my music at 320kbs or higher (sometime lossless). I started out with a FLAC rip of Rush 2112 album (70's prog rock) and was blown away within the first few moments. I didn't think it possible to have such an airy, 3 dimensional, out-of-your-head sound from ear buds but these Sonys manage it with aplomb. Moving on to more modern music I gave Daft Punk's Random Access Memories ago from Spotify. The dance music had great rhythm and well controlled bass. A wee dabble in to some classical music didn't phase these either. As for the button on the cord...yes there is no volume control, but as others have pointed out your phone isn't likely to be that far away and an in line volume control is adding 'resistance' to the music which could affect quality. The button does work well for call handling. Also I use PowerAmp as my android music player. Its menu allows you to decide what button presses do e.g one click to pause/start, double click to advance, treble click or long click to go back. The Sonys handle all the commands well. I don't often take calls while wearing headphones (to be honest it hasn't been an option before) but having tried it a few times, call quality was perfect and the person on the other end never complained or commented that I sound weird (or should that be 'wired'). Overall, I am delighted with these. The only slight down side is the claim that the cable will not tangle. Granted it is better than previous earphones I have had, the cable having a textured feel, but it still finds a away to loop itself into a bow! Maybe I need to take a little more care before storing?

Excellent in ear headphones. My go-to choice for use with an up-market mp3/wav player. Well made and durable [if you don't abuse them] and, for me at least, very comfortable. They are not noise-cancelling, but they fit well and cut out most annoying ambient noises like kids and people with loud voices on their phones....

With these headphones I came from the Soundmagic E10, which I was, for the most part, happy with. The only thing missing was a mic and a bit of bass. With the E10's I used the included double flange eartips since their isolation wasn't great. I discovered these earphones through their magical What HiFi rating which made me take the plunge. Bearing in mind I'm not an audiophile and this is the most I've spent on headphones. When first trying the headphones, they didn't sound great. The sound was muddy and lacking in bass which was slightly surprising. But they had glowing reviews and I've heard of this 'burn in period' as well so I decided to persist with them, and I'm glad I did! They definitely open up after a few hours use and they definitely pack a punch with the bass (but not overpowering). If you're coming from iPhone earphones, there's a huge difference! You hear things in your songs that you've never heard and they actually stay in your ear! The fit was pretty good. Once you choose the right earbud size (I had to go one lower than the ones fitted on originally) they stay in your ear perfectly thanks to the design which sort of just sits in your ear. The isolation was pretty good as well. Once they fit in your ear properly they block a fair amount of outside noise. Since i'm on a daily commute to London, I'm not looking to block all the sound since I don't have a death wish so they're perfect for me. I've actually used these in the gym as well. Obviously not great, but not as bad as you may think! They probably fell out twice but for the most part managed to stay in There are a few negatives. I've had these less than a month, and the brass colour has sort of started chipping away which is disappointing. Another thing is the button on the inline mic is quite mushy. There's no good response from it so there's quite a few times where I'm unsure if I've actually pressed it or not. I hate the one button for everything approach, but I suppose this isn't really a Sony problem so they cannot be faulted for that. All in all, a great choice without breaking the bank.

After going through my second pair of e10s I was struggling on deciding whether to buy another set or try a new pair of earphones. Ultimately, I chose to buy this Sony pair--a decision I do not regret. Simply put, these are the best set of earphones I have ever purchased and I would urge anyone considering them to take the jump, like I did, and get them. Sound Quality: Perhaps the most important aspect of any audio equipment, I can gladly say that these earphones more than deliver on the premise of sound quality. While I may not know all the fancy terms ("bass", "treble"??) I easily recommend these to the casual listeners and audiophiles on a budget alike, looking to splurge on a great piece of equipment. Part of what made look for a new model of earphones was that I felt my last pair lacked a certain "oomph" behind the vocals melody, and production, and luckily these headphones surpass my expectations. Overall, on sound quality alone, these are a steal. Design/Ergonomics: Adding to the impressive sound of the earphones, sony's unique brass design is simply stunning. The duality of black and brass running through design creates a stylish yet subdued look. I've had many compliment's from friends about the premium, quality look that these boast. For the fashion conscious, these will prove a hit no doubt. Comfort-wise these once again Sony blows the ball out of the park. The four interchangeable buds ensure these will fit even the most demanding ears but for me the stock buds fit perfectly. Build Quality: Unsurprisingly, these live more than well up to sony's connotation with quality. The cable, although thin, has a beautiful feel and texture and the brass elements feel solid and sturdy. Negatives: I'm happy to report that negatives come few and far between here. Since I don't use it I can't comment much on the little control bar although some may be disappointed that it lacks volume control. Additionally, despite its great feel, the cable lacks any 'anti-tangle' measures so-to-speak which is a minor but nevertheless unfortunate omission.

These Sony earphones are overall really solid. Sound quality is nice, with a good amount of bass for the price, even if my ears aren’t the best. Build quality feels premium, they’ve lasted me a long time and I still actively use them every day. They do tend to tangle pretty easily, but the connection to my PC is flawless and they just feel comfortable to wear. Cable length is also nice and long what's always a nice plus. Honestly, I don’t have any major complaints; they’ve been reliable, sound great, and for the price, they’re definitely worth it. 8.5/10.

I bought a set of Sony MDR-EX110LP Deep Bass Earphones last month for a tenner as insurance against my current headphones breaking during a long all day Journey. I laughed when one of the ear pieces had stopped working when I started using them on the first train of the day. I had the backup Sony MDR-EX110LP Deep Bass Earphones in my shirt pocket and I was good to go while marveling at my instinct to buy backup earphones. The sound was fine for my needs, they served me well on the journey, but the amount of cable was aggravating and it feels delicate. It also tangled a lot which was a pain when pulling into a station and having to rush to leave the train. So I bought Sony MDR-EX650 Earphones with Brass Housing when I returned home so I don't have the same problem on the next journey. Reviews said they don't TANGLE and the reviews are correct. I wrap them around my fingers and stuff them in the storage pouch with the brass ear pods hanging out side them. The pouch stays flat and and fits a shirt pocket perfectly. The sound was not much better than the ones I bought last month but I read some reviews saying they have to be broken in like a pair of shoes, that they improve after a while. I was skeptical about this but sure enough from yesterday they have sounded amazing. The bass when the volume is high is crisp and punchy, no distortion at all, and this has a downside for me. It was making me turn up the volume too high without realising. I'm more conscious of it now but it just shows what a few extra quid gets you. I'm really impressed with the sound. There is a button on the left sided wire and when pressed it cuts off the music. It says something about a microphone but I have no idea what it means. It's handy not having to take the phone out my pocked and then its cover to cut off the music, but then I have to remove the earphones because of the noise cancelling. After pressing the button on the wire to hear sound around me I hear nothing. My phone is an Android. The brass feels and looks great. A review said they fall out the ear if doing activities but mine have not fallen out my ears once. They also don't feel any different to plastic ones in the ear. I like the brass, it gives them a classy look when in the ears. I paid £49.99, I see they're £59.99 today. Having heard the quality and experienced the robustness of the wire I would buy these again and pay more for them if it was necessary. I still have the backup ones I bought last month and they will probably fit in the flat pouch with these ones when I remember where I put them, If they do then bonus. I'll go one better and get a double 3mm Earphone jack in the pouch too. This way somebody near me on a train can listen to my music too and be overwhelmed by my taste.

Initially I had rated these as being “Excellent, with some compromises” and 4 Stars. The compromises were, at the time, unremarkable due to the price and sound quality. However, they completely died ridiculously prematurely from average use and with appropriate and safe storage techniques. I loved the brilliant sound and commented that the build quality was great for the price. Apparently this was an illusion as they’re actually just attractive looking junk. I’m not alone here looking at some other reviews. All products have a failure rate, but it seems a bit more than average from these reviews that the items quit within 4-9 months. All could be forgiven, or atleast only dropping a star if it were relatively straight forward and easy to sort the exchange under warranty. I found it extraordinary difficult to figure out how to get service from Sony. Even now when I think I have the answer from them I am surprised and unsure to an extent I’ve wrote Amazon. Sony say on their site they do not repair these items as it’s more cost effective to replace. Fair enough. However, instead of having a facility to setup and return the defective item the site tells you to contact your dealer for advice on how to effect an in warranty exchange. Truly awful as guess what the dealer will say after a month or so? They’ll say contact the manufacturer who provides the warranty! Thus, whilst I know Sony is supposed to provide me a replacement there’s really no obvious way to sort this. I’m hoping Amazon steps up and helps and I shall report back. In sum, my advice if pondering buying these: when they worked they were good for the price but even then e.g. the buttons could have offered more features, e.g. volume control, which other similarly priced models do including the originals you’re replacing. Given the less than stellar longevity and Sony’s warranty hassles, I advise go with someone else and I’m just going to say Sennheiser is a great option. From experience, they are the most helpful company for warranty issues I’ve ever come across. Unlike Sony figuring out how to and sorting a return takes minutes and they have gone above and beyond for me before. I’m unsure why I even considered anyone else.

These really are as good as reviews say they are. I could not believe the increase in volume, bass and sound quality compared to my older Sony earphones which cost £30 at the time. For £40 these were an absolute steal. They are comfortable, look good, feel good, they are just pure class. I cannot comment how they compare to other more expensive earphones, but I have no desire to find out either. You will not be disappointed by these. This comes from someone who may not be an audiophile, but does care about making his MP3s/AACs sound as good as possible. The only downside is that they do not do separate versions for Android and iPhones, meaning no volume controls. This is especially disappointing for those of us who have iPhones as we are used to most earphones' volume controls working. However, this does not detract from me recommending these earphones, they are brilliant. UPDATE: 2 and a half years later, just thought I’d update my review. I don’t use these earphones very often (a few times a month max) so I’m surprised to find they have broken now. The left earphone has stopped working, which seems to be linked to the wire/cable, as twisting it where it plugs into the phone sometimes brings the ear back working. Also, as noted by others, parts of the earphones have turned green, which I presume is similar to how copper pipes can go green. Not great for earphones! It’s such a shame as the sound quality of these was great, and the mic worked great too. I won’t buying anymore of these, I wish Sony did some non-brass versions of these as I’d probably go for them. I think this time I’ll get some Panasonic ones for under £10, as I won’t be as bothered when they break.

J'ai acheté ces écouteurs intra-auriculaires Sony MDR-EX650APT en noir et la qualité sonore comme la finition sont au rendez-vous. Qualité sonore et basses : Le corps en laiton élimine très bien les vibrations indésirables. Le son est riche, bien équilibré avec des basses profondes mais dynamiques, sans jamais étouffer les médiums et les aigus. Microphone et commande : Le micro intégré sur le câble fonctionne parfaitement pour passer des appels au clair. La télécommande permet de prendre la ligne ou de mettre en pause la musique sans sortir le téléphone. Confort et isolation : Les embouts en silicone ajustés offrent un excellent confort, même après plusieurs heures d'écoute, tout en isolant très efficacement des bruits extérieurs. Câble anti-nœuds : Le cordon strié évite que les écouteurs ne s'emmêlent constamment dans la poche ou le sac. Un excellent choix pour les amoureux de bon son qui cherchent des écouteurs filaires fiables et élégants. Je recommande les yeux fermés !

habe die stöpsel jetzt seit ca. 1 woche und bin sehr zufrieden. ich hatte auch schon wesentlich teurere aber die hier können da gut mithalten. erstmal würde ich gern auf einen beitrag hier eingehen wo einer schreibt das die gummienippel ständig abfallen - bei mir ist das nicht so, sie sitzen bombenfest. OPTIK: ich steh auf plastik, und leicht müssen sie sein (ich gehöre nicht zu den typen die gewicht mit "wertigkeit" gleichsetzen, ist ja auch oft einfach nur blödsinn). ich muss aber sagen die dinger sehen schön schlicht aus, durch den messing-look halt etwas "oldschool" bzw. "klassisch". sie sind auch relativ schwer (die schwersten in ears die ich jemals hatte) was mir beim auspacken sofort sorgen machte ... aber ... SITZ: ... sie sitzen absolut perfekt im ohr und fallen niemals raus wie so viele andere inears. sie sind so geformt das sie in der ohrmuschel aufliegen, daher ist das hohe gewicht sogar förderlich - super gelöst. KLANG: ist auf ziemlich hohem niveau, klare höhen, ausgewogene mitten, das einzig auffällige: er hat etwas mehr bass als vielleicht ein 300€ inear - richtet sich halt eher an otto-normal hörer und der will nunmal etwas mehr bass, stört aber nicht, ist ja auch alles eine sache der gewöhnung. mir ist immer sehr wichtig das die höhen klar sind und das sind sie! er ist auch im allgemeinen ziemlich laut btw. ... dieser in ear hat in 2014 eine menge preise abgeräumt und das nicht ohne grund. habe schon überlegt mir ein zweites paar zu kaufen falls es sie irgendwann nicht zu kaufen gibt, also klare kaufempfehlung. EDIT: knapp 1 1/2 jahre haben sie gehalten dann hatten sie einen wackelkontakt, bin aber auch öfter mit dem kabel an der hantelstange oder bürostuhl etc. hängen geblieben, also ein guter wert finde ich. habe sie heute direkt nochmal besttellt, der tragekomfort sucht einfach seinesgleichen.
