How do you tell which size you need?

I just looked at it on amazon and because I have two toilets with these fitted it just looked right. I did not know they came in sizes, I have changed one before, but got the whole unit just to get the flapper valve. I was pleased when I saw amazon did just the flapper valve and half price of whole unit. Sorry I cannot be any more help. It does say on the package that it is for 2" flapper units.

my old one is 2.5 inches across. Is this the same size please?

The one I have is slightly bigger at 2.75 inches across but that shouldn't be a problem.

My toilets very old, pull chain type. Would this be the right one to buy?

Agree with Fred’s comments. It would be a good modification to swap out the entire unit, but depending on the age of your high level cistern the whole down-pipe may also need changing as these were often lead jointed. Unless you are really good at plumbing, this is a job for a plumber.
