Photography Masterclass: Creative Techniques of 100 Great Photographers : Lowe, Paul: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Hugely interesting and informative - A book packed with one example of the work of an enormous number and range of photographers. I read through it at a slow pace as each two- page spread on each photographer takes quite a bit of study. Along with a short biography of each photographer and a comments on his or her work, there is a section on creative tips and techniques. Some are pretty obvious, but others have given me lots of ideas for my own photography. Review: Love this book - Wow! Disappointed
I ordered this book for a friends daughter's 18th birthday. I am disappointed but as I need the present for Monday I have not got time to get a replacement. The book was sold as new and it does not look as if it has been read. However, there is a 1cm dent and tear on the edge of the front cover as if it has been dropped onto a hard, narrow, edge (maybe a table corner or a metal shelf edge). This won't affect the readability but does look as if I have purchased a cheap bargain, not the ideal book that I had intended to give her about her interest.

This book is a parody. Avoid it!

Within 10 minutes, I was turned off when I found factual errors. First, he describes Havana's famous restaurant as a "parador". The word he is look for to describe private restaurants in Cuba is "paladar". This is a very common term, and just plain sloppy for a photojournalist to not do the basic research on this. He also describes the photo as the photo as the "entrance hallway" to the restaurant. What we're looking at in the photo is the 2nd floor. This building has been photographed extensively. There is a large mural and fabulous staircase on the first floor, then the second floor (which is what we are looking at), and finally the restaurant on the third floor. So, this is in no way the "entrance hallway". Once again, just sloppy. A lot of the advice or insight into the photos is very basic, or not helpful. Plus, the overwhelming majority of these photos are taken by white men. Sure, they dominated for a long time, but some variety and fresh voices would be nice. This book has some interesting photos and commentary, but the factual errors and descriptions are just a turnoff overall.
