GPO 746 Rotary 1970s-Style Retro Landline Telephone, Classic Telephone with Ringer On/Off Switch, Curly Cord, Authentic Bell Ring for Home, Hotels- Ivory

We had the original GPO 746 in red back in the good old days. These new versions may not be as they originally were back then but they are the officially approved GPO phones made by GPO. Mine arrived today & if like some customers have said its lightweight and not as heavy as the originals then this new updated version isint far from it. My new phone seems just as good as the 1970s originals. The quality is very good and the only main differences is the ringer is slightly different to the original but still loud enough for me to hear over tv's etc and the dial has had the hash & star added to it. I've bought the grey phone & I've tested it myself with no problems (all functions work) I can dial out to make calls including mobiles and receive calls . I have no difficulty hearing any callers and if I need to dial a single number for automated services etc then there's no problem as you can do all that with this phone. It looks great and I'm very happy with my purchase. It arrived in perfect condition very quickly. I'd highly recommend this phone for everyone who had the original back in the day or anyone who missed out the first time around. We'll done to the GPO.🙂🙂

So, had to write a review of this. I have had the original GPO version of this phone on my desk for countless years, it has, and in fact, does still work perfectly but of course, lacks the ability to use modern (and in my view) annoying star and hash services. However, with the upcoming switch to tone only service, I wanted to see if my old phone could be converted, but it seems it could not, but during my research, I stumbled across this modern version, for the cost, I thought that I would give it a try. What a wonderful phone it is, basically the same as my original GPO version, with the addition of the two extra holes on the dial for the star and hash function, the addition of an on/off switch for the bell and a high/low switch for the handset volume. It was a straight plug-in replacement for the original and sounds exactly the same, I can confirm that the dial system works perfectly and allows full use of all services. Very impressed with this device. Pity it was not available in the original green, but I am more than happy with the Black version.

I really love this phone. I bought the black one as it best reminds me of "the old days". It is quite heavy and doesn't appear flimsy at all (and being black it is really shiny too!). I had wondered if it would be able to handle the modern day automated system of "press 1 for something, press 2 for something else etc.", but all you do is dial the 1 or 2 instead of pushing the buttons and it works the same. The only issue I have is that to dial any numbers higher than 3 you need to hold the base with one hand as it moves around too much, so you basically can't hold the receiver properly while you dial the number as you need that hand to hold the base steady. I don't know what we used to do in the past as this phone seems as heavy as the old ones were. Perhaps there are some kind of non-slip pads that can be stuck on the feet to hold it in place, which would make a world of difference. It comes with the cable, but the jack that goes into the OpenReach socket doesn't fit - the jack is the small square one but the socket is rectangular. So if you don't already have a phone to take the cable from, you will need to buy one. This was a bit disappointing because my old cable is grey and the black one obviously looked nicer, but it's no big deal. The phone is very basic. It is literally just a phone, no caller display or any other benefit that we have come to take for granted these days. But if it is authenticity that you are looking for, you will not be disappointed. It takes me back to my youth and makes me happy just looking at it!

I love this beautiful red retro landline phone. I received calls without problems and could hear people who called me better than on my previous modern landline phone, the line was very clear. I did not test it till a few days after being received when I had to make a call. Every time you dial a specific number there is a noise, I did not a noise that for number 3 and 8. As a result the number was not recognised and would not dial out. Yet when I dialed out the same number from my mobile it worked perfectly. If it had worked I would have kept this beautiful red retro phone but it is no use to me as it is. Amending this review 2 days after return to say that I have been told I have to wait up a maximum of up to 14 days from the day I returned it to get a refund. After enquiring as to why it has to take that long to be refunded I was refunded sooner. Amending on 16/02. Bought identical phone as loved 1st one that did not work to give it another chance. I paid for that second phone. I paid for the first one too and got refunded as faulty. This second identical one seems to work. I have noticed that when I dial out all numbers work ( # too. Have not tried the * yet ) the noise it makes when dialing a number is a lot faster than on the previous one. I suspect the issue with the first one was mechanical. I hear very clearly while I am on the phone on this one. I posted some photos, it is a gorgious red. The phone line is red and supposed to be connected to the phone but as I have a call blocker I have to connect it to the call blocker instead.

Well it looks like the old GPO phones and that was what I wanted to harken back to my childhood and fit in with my 70’s decor. It is let down though by some rather low quality areas. Compared to an original version of this phone the plastic is of lower quality and thinner. The bell is rather weedy and a higher tone than the originals. The phone is also so lightweight I cannot dial with one hand. It is also physically a little smaller than the original phones. For looks it certainly hits the style button and it’s dial functions are fine but again with a cheap breakable feel to the mechanism. I do like this phone but may make some changes such as fitting a better bell mechanism and adding a steel plate to give it more weight so I can dial without having to hold the phone down.

OMG! I'm loving this! When I was growing up in the 70's, my family had a red version of this phone and when I saw this on Amazon, I had to get one. I'm so happy with my purchase. It looks, feels, and more importantly, sounds just as I remembered! There is nothing flimsy about this phone. The chassis is a good quality build, nice and heavy. The handset is slightly lighter than the original phone in the 70's but that takes nothing away from it. The rotary dial isn't as tightly wound as I remember the original being, but again, this is not an issue, as it is adapted for pulse tone. There is also a # and * on the dial for use with telephonic menu options, i.e banks, etc. This has the actual bell as the ringer, which threw me straight back to the 70's when I first heard it. Loved it! There is an ON/OFF switch for the ringer and you have a choice of Normal or High for the ringer also. I keep mine on High, just because I love hearing the phone ring throughout my home :) The sound quality on the line is great. No distortion, no crackling and those I've called on it, have said that they hear me perfectly clearly. I also have a cordless phone plugged into another socket and there is no interference with either. GPO have made a quality product that I'm happy to recommend to anyone who is thinking of buying from this brand.

Whilst the phone itself seems fine aesthetically, the lead supplied with it is incompatible with a standard UK (BT) connection socket. Presumably UK consumers need somekind of adapter to link the phone lead to your broadband hub or a different type of lead neither which has been supplied.

Il primo non funzionava, ma devo dire che l’ho restituito senza problemi. Il secondo invece funziona benissimo ed è un bel componente del nostro arredamento: tutti lo notano e lo apprezzano

Es una belleza. Su color rojo es fantástico. Y funciona a la perfección. El tono de llamada, escandaloso como debería de ser en un modelo original. Estoy encantada con la compra.
