Can these be painted?

Paint wouldn't last, but you could probably use a wood dye on the white ones, e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005940TP8

how good is the colour contrast? I already have a set where "black" and "white" are barely distinguishable and am looking to replace

They are fantastic and you can tell the difference between black and white. Been using them since I got it very good.

Does this set come with a striker??

No it doesn’t you have to purchase separately.
