Are the 12 plants a variety of species or are they the same type of plant?

I was disappointed. I expected more variety. I was sent 3 varieties, 4 of each. In the picture it appears like there will be 12 different plants.

how much sunlight do they need?

I could have just checked "I don't know". But a better answer is it depends: depends on the type Tillandsia you have. I am not an expert and can hardley tell one type from another. What I have read is there are maybe a thousand different kinds. Most I think are native to rain forests.. But some thrive in desert conditions. Google Tillandsia - that is what I did. Good luck. I have had one plant for over six years. It produced many buds and grew 10 fold. But it never bloomed. It never got direct sunlight. Maybe it needed some. 

how big will they grow?

Individual plants grow up to 3 or 4 inches tall. They also grow "pups" from their base and multiply. You can let them multiply and grow into a large cluster/ball or separate the plants as they get larger.

What kind of water should I use?

I just use regular tap water. I haven't had any problems. You can let the water sit overnight if you want. Every few months I add a little seaweed fertilizer to the water. They even bloom for me.
