This 99.99% (4N) gallium offered by Magnametals is a lower cost alternative to our existing 99.9999% (6N) range and is the lowest cost 50g of gallium on .co.uk. It is sold in a clear screw cap plastic bottle so you can look at the pure gallium beads. For your convenience you can easily pour out just the amount of gallium you want to work with, rather than having to melt a large solid lump of metal. We include a polyethylene bottle and cap for melting the gallium and storing melted gallium afterwards. We advise you do not handle with your hands directly. Firstly, as it covers your hands in a fine grey covering that is difficult to remove. Secondly it will contaminate the pure gallium. Use the Nitrile gloves that we supply or a clean plastic spatula or spoon. You will receive a 4N gallium Certificate of analysis (COA) and a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) with your gallium. History: First proposed to exist by Dmitri Mendeleyev in 1871 based on gaps in his newly created Periodic Table of Elements, gallium was discovered and obtained by the French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875. Elemental gallium does not occur in free form in nature but trace amounts of gallium are found in zinc ores and bauxite as well as in the by products of burning coal. Properties and uses: Elemental gallium is a soft, silvery metal, it is a brittle solid at low temperatures, Gallium melts near room temperature at 29.76ºC and has one of the largest liquid ranges of any metal, so it has found use in high temperature thermometers. Gallium easily forms alloys with most metals and has been used to create low melting alloys. Gallium is used as a doping material for semiconductors and has been used to produce solid-state items like transistors and light emitting diodes. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) can produce laser light directly from electricity.

Really Cool
I bought 2 lots of these for my 11 year old son's Xmas stocking. He loves Chemistry and spent Xmas afternoon playing with Gallium. He made a mould of a fidget spinner in plasticine, melted the gallium in warm water, sucked it up with a syringe from his chemistry set and filled the mould. It comes with a really useful information sheet. On the sheet, it mentions, "supercooling", where Gallium doesn't always solidify when it goes below it's melting point. This happened for my son, so he put it in the fridge for a few hours and it solidified. The fidget spinner was cool. He also made a small car, again using a plasticine mould and used it as his playing piece for monopoly. There are lots of ideas of how to experiment with Gallium on youtube. Supervise your child, when the gallium melts as it can destroy other metals, so any spills need to be dealt with quickly. It was loads of fun....he is going to see what happens when you mix it with aluminium next!
