Big in Japan...Yes it Is...
Well as person who makes Japan regular found this Book fascinating insight into what my blue eyes see when walking through town in 2018-9 as its kind of hidden but like the love hotels which are painted red its Sex....Sex sometimes not the vibe of younger generation who prefer games...not a fan of tech myself so will never find that vibe.As to Sex industry in any country and Holland very skilled and well managed as my experience so far,the sex in Japan is big....but not in your face so much...Like book, the scans were of all types and great street scenes which I know well and so cool to be reminded of them...good book so go buy yourself a copy and read with coffee or slinky hot drink...Enjoy Book Lovers...Chao

Behind the Pink...
I snapped up this book on release several months ago now.I wanted to learn more about Japanese Pink cinema and to a large extent reading this book will increase your knowledge greatly. That being said i found this book a challenging read which took me quite awhile to finish. The writing style is very dense with information and the layout does not lend itself well to dipping in and out of at leisure,i found it difficult to use as an easy reference guide because of this.I guess i was after something more along the lines of an A to Z guide for 'Roman Porno's' initially perhaps? This is no fault of the book/author though as it's an exhaustive well researched history of the genre and will likely be the most in-depth book written in english on these films for many years to come. All of which makes it a must buy if you have any interest in Japans own brand of sexploitation cinema.

Amazing work, somewhat flawed result
I needed this for an essay. First of all, I don't even want to imagine the amount of work that must have gone into this book. It's really comprehensive, while of course it's not the "full history" of Japanese sex cinema, because it's probably impossible for a single human to know everything about that -- there's just too much stuff out here, previously unreleased films find their release, forgotten works get discovered in random archives... So yeah. Good work. BUT there is something that really bothers me: It's the fact that Sharp uses English names for the films that were somehow released in the West (mostly in an obscure way by some niche DVD label 15 years ago) in the main text, so if you only know the original Japanese film titles -- and seriously, the original title always is what you use if you work with films in a scientific way --, you have no idea about which film he is talking about. There's a glossary, but it's just too much work to use it ALL THE TIME. Plus, if there's no English title he uses the Japanese title anyway, so sometimes it's just a complete mess. I mean, just use the original titles first, add the translated title in brakes, and everybody is happy. This really left a negative impression on me. Also I don't like inverting Japanese names, but that's a matter of personal preference. My brain somehow couldn't connect "Yuriko Hishimi" with Hishimi Yuriko, because I'm so used to the sound in Japanese. So yeah, it's probably the best you can get about Japanese erotic cinema in English language, but it has its flaws. I guess they're mostly the editor's fault, not Sharp's, but I only know the result. Also, I have absolutely no idea why 日本の成人映画全史 is written in Simplified Chinese(!!) characters!

the kind of films your mother wouldn't want you to see
A well-illustrated, scholarly, accessible and entertaining history of the type of Japanese films you won't see in your average high street retail outlet. From the expected to the bizarre, this history covers in depth the development and themes of the Japanese sex film industry, and contains many surprises...my favourite so far is a film that covers the political situation in North Korea, Chomsky, and has - or appears to have - a certain George Bush as a sex aid. And above all this book provides an insight into a mostly hidden side of Japan.

A Must Have For Japanese Pink Film Fanatics
Jasper Sharp's encyclopedic approach to Japanese "pink" films is highly anticipated and rightfully so given Chris D's so-so Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film , Schilling's enjoyable No Borders, No Limits: Nikkatsu Action Cinema (Cinema Classics) and Hunter's comprehensive Eros in Hell: Sex, Blood and Madness in Japanese Cinema (Creation Cinema Collection) . Sharp's highly methodical approach to the subject (1960s to the present) may be considered a bit "dry," but it is well written and academics will appreciate it. A great draw of this work includes an amazing number of images both in black and white and color (unlike Chris D's advertised work). Each chapter ends with detailed footnotes and as a bonus each film is included in the appendix listed by film director. Sharp also acknowledges DVD re-issues of the films (i.e., Madame O , Entrails of a Beautiful Woman , and Daydream-re-issued by Something Weird). If you are familiar with Kimstim, Synapse Films, and other companies re-issuing Pink classics; you'll be elated that an author has a finger on the pulse of Pink fans. This is an intriguing look at the massive porn industry ...
This is an intriguing look at the massive porn industry in Japan. It explains the phenomenon of pink films vs. roman films, and explains why Japanese film-goers are obsessed with these erotic films. A large book, with plenty of photos and considerable discussion of the cultural trends which gave rise to these film genres and the impact of them on the culture.
