Is it a load of ball?
A lot of shop keepers tell me, go for the "Zebo", it's a better cleaner. (or is it because of all profit made from spare cleaner bags etc?) Well, my previous cleaner was a "Zebo" and it started to play up after many years of very good service, but my wife never liked this cleaner. So, I purchased the Dyson animal DC40. I have had it six weeks now, both my wife and I feel the cleaner is great. With the Zebo, the cable length was greater, and the way the hose just lifts out is far better, but that is where the story ends. The "Dyson" hose, I feel is very akward, but having said that, I do not have to get the hose out so much; because this cleaner, with the aid of the ball, allows me to get in to corners the "Zebo" would never reach, and the way this cleaner get right up to the edge is great, it just sucks the dirt up. The ball really makes cleaning the home such much easier, in fact my wife told me off, because I spent so much time cleaning the edges, I forgot to clean in the centre of the lounge! I do find the mains cable coming out half way down the cleaners length a pain, better the cable making an exit from the top; having said that, I would recommend this cleaner to any body; best move I made, getting this cleaner, no effort what so ever wizzing around the floor. Well done Mr Dyson.

Update Not impressed
First dyson ever used as always thought there to pricey But after buying vax and other types of hoovers which only last less than a year, thought we would spend a tad extra and try one and so far not disappointed the suction is great and the fact you can just easily pull the handle out and attach a Tool is soo easy to do the stairs without the need to pull this out and connect this, its just one thing its great. And it does reach the top step which is the last step before the landing with Dyson at the bottom of the stairs. and the Dyson is ever so easy to clean and remove things caught in it and the brush bar is very nice and easy to remove all the hair its caught. very impressed so far But only had it a couple of months so lets see if it out lives a year and keeps the suction. Update:- well after 5 months of use this has Lost all the suction it had, now it wont or has a very hard job to pick up cat hair let alone any large bits on the floor. we have cleaned it, took it all apart (what we can) and gave it a good clean and still the same, pretty bad actually for a hoover to be 5 months old and lost basically half the suction power it had. going to see if i can return and get some other type of hoover as have had 10 times better hoovers at a fraction of the price, but first Dyson and thought we would give it ago. Beware this seller only gives 30 day warranty after that you have to call Dyson for repair which will work out costly

Ditch your heavy impractical hoover for this lightweight monster!
It's light, durable, easy to fit but don't let the price put you off. Although these hoovers are a little on the expensive side, I have been very impressed since buying it and seeing if it was worth the money. Having a pet cat I chose the 'animal' option hoover and i've been very impressed since. This is a well designed hoover, took no longer than a few mins to put together with the small additional attachments easy to store in a place that won't take up too much space. The performance is really good, even sucks up small pieces of polystyrene with ease it doesn't leave you going over the same spot countless times as with other hoovers. Moving in tight corners isn't a problem due to the flexible rotating ball that allows you to manoeuvre in awkward places. It has a switch to move between hard and soft floor settings and it's lightweight frame makes hoovering the stairs very easy. The only downside I would say is the lack of a bigger area for the rubbish to collect. If you have new carpet you will make many trips to empty the cylinder but it's so easy and not at all messy that it isn't annoying. Overall, well worth the price, I would definitely recommend.

A great vacuum if not a little ungainly
We've got a small flat in central London so were initially considering the DC50, as it's quite a bit smaller. However, after playing with the two models in John Lewis we ultimately went with the larger model. The build quality of the DC40 is much better than the DC50 (which felt cheap and flimsy). So far I'm quite happy with my purchase - it's easy to use, powerful and (as with all Dyson products) nice to look at. Two minor comments: 1 - the extension hose is quite stiff (as everyone has said) and is only really good for vacuuming things above your head. If you want to use it to vacuum the baseboards you have to contort yourself into a giant letter "K" to hold the machine in place with your foot while you angle the tube over your shoulder and back down to the floor. If you don't do this a) the machine chases after you and kicks you in the ankles and b) the tube bends itself in half and you lose all suction. This would be easily fixed if there were brakes and if the base of the tube, where it attaches to the machine, was on a hinge so it could come out at an angle other than vertical... 2 - it can be a bit wobbly when vacuuming in tight spaces. They've put a lot of effort into making the roller ball dynamic and easily steerable, which it definitely is. However, as a consequence it feels a bit like driving a wobbly Ferrari at 9000 rpm when you've only just pressed the "on" button. In short, it needs stiffer suspension. Overall stil a good buy though, and definitely the better choice if you're considering the DC50.

Delighted with dyson
We had a 17 year old panasonic vacuum before replacing it with the animal dyson dc40 and have been delighted with the improved cleaning ability. (I imagine most new vacuums would seem good after using such an old one!) It's very easy to steer and requires much less effort to manouver around and lift up the stairs. I notice that I can stand much straighter when hoovering. I haven't had problems with the wand being stiff and find the tools that accompanied it very good. I'm fact I bought the extra dusting brush and find the one that comes with the dyson perfectly adequate. The only difference between the dc40 and the dc40 animal is an extra cleaning head that fits on the wand and has spinning "wheels" to get up pet hair. Our dog doesn't shed much and the brush is so small that you would only really want to use it on stairs or furniture. So for me, I think the normal dyson would have been fine. The dyson picks up loads of dust and is very easy to empty. I probably will buy a second filter though because they need washing each month and take 24 hours to dry. The dyson runs smoothly over all our floors and you just press a button to stop the brushes spinning on hard floors. I'm really pleased with it!

Good but not Perfect
I bought the DC40 to replace my 13 year old Dyson DC05 Absolute which has been outstanding. We switched to an upright because my wife prefers this style rather than dragging something along behind her. It is compact, it's not overly heavy but certainly not light. This is my first experience of the dyson ball and I did expect it to be a bit smoother. We have tile floors not carpet so this isn't much resistance being given to the ball; what I've found it that it slides a fair amount before it grips, possibly because of its all plastic ball design. Suction is outstanding as expected but I am very disappointed with the functionality of the extendable wand! There are some serious design flaws with this style and nothing like the Promo Videos show. The flexible hose if very stiff/tight so when you pull out to use the attachments you have to get someone to hold the main unit or somehow extend your foot to lock it in place. A brake would perhaps be handy and it is definately NOT comfortable to use. I invested in the extra accessories pack and I'm starting to think that the dual role of upright and extendable wand style is going to be more like upright only. For a company that prides itself in design and engineering I think they've got this wrong. I'm hoping that the flexible hose will losen up a bit with use but I also found the solid part of the wand uncomfortable to use and it needs some kind of clip on handle. You have to use two hands one to keep yanking on the hose and the other to guide the wand all whilst trying to prvent the main unit from moving around!

Great buy
I was dubious about buying this Dyson ball lightweight because it said condition acceptable and Iโve only bought new or like new refurbished but was delighted with the condition. This was like new, suction strong and crevice tool with it, also very clean and smelt fresh and fragrant when hoovering which sadly a experience another person said they hadnโt had with one they purchased. I have other Dysons as I am a Dyson only person as they are the best, in my opinion, so this lightweight ball was exactly as it should be and expected, it manoeuvre with ease and parts all appeared to have been replaced with new. I canโt find any complaints about this Dyson and will happily my refurbished again as I said in other reviews. One you have used a Dyson only a Dyson will ever do, once again a excellent product in great condition. Thank you, Sandra ๐๐ผ
