Review: Wine country... - Portugal is a little off the beaten path by European standards. On the plus side, Portugal missed the devastation of the First and Second World Wars. Its many medieval sites and museums are still intact and open to visitors. The big attraction (apart from the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean) may be the enticing Douro Valley. The Douro Valley is wine country and home to Portugal's lucrative port wine industry, which may be explored by road, rail, or excursion boat. This Rick Steves guide offers his standard thoughtful and detailed approach to planning a visit. The book contains lots of useful information, but you really do have to read it all to get the full benefit. The chapters allow for meaningful choices on what to see, where to stay, and how to get there. The text has a useful selection of maps and a pull-out color planning map in the back. In addition, the text includes an enticing selection of color and black& white photographs. Well recommended to the enterprising traveler. Review: Only book you need for Portugal. - This was my first time using a Rick Steves book and I am sold. I read a ton before going to Portugal and it was really helpful in deciding what to do. Used two of his recommendations on hotels and were pleased , as well as the recommendation to visit Salema instead of a different part of the Algarve . Also chose his pick for fado in Lisbon. Couldnโt have been better. I was talking about Rick as if he was on my trip with me haha. All of the details necessary were included . Great purchase.

Best Travel Guide for Portugal
If you want a travel guide to help you visit, plan your trip, and actually see the sites, this is it. Rick Steves provides practical information to help you plan and actually guide yourself through Portugal. We followed his advice and as we moved from one city to the next, we tore out the pages for that city and carried them with us. Along with a map of the city that you are in from the Tourist Information Office (in that city) you can guide yourself on very informative tours - use his walking tours for each city. The hotels and restaurants that are recommended are less useful - I recommend Viator or Booking.com for the hotels and use Yelp for up-to-date recommendations for the restaurants. Good luck and safe travels!

Very good guide.
Very good guide. Practical advice. Saves you money. Describes city walk and major attractions as well as hotels and restaurants with good quality and prices. In addition, it provides history of the country and directions of how to get to a place. My guide in Europe.

Maybe the most comprehensive and useful guide to Portugal!
Rick Steve's Portugal guidebook was very handy in planning our trip to Portugal. Many of the tips regarding travel etiquette, customs, useful phrases, etc., were extremely relevant to us. We felt like we arrived in Portugal already aware of what we wanted to see and do. The included maps were especially helpful in determining our hotel selections. 100% recommend this book!

We were very happy with the guide. Like all Rick Steves travel books, it focuses on the most important places to visit and describes them in enough detail to make each visit meaningful. We also appreciated the quality of the maps. They are exceptionally easy to read and convey just the necessary information.

Comprehensive, easy to use, recommends great resources not available elsewhere
I followed Rick's guide on every city and places I visited in Portugal for three weeks in the country. The recommendations of this guide gave our family an opportunity to learn the country's hidden secrets that we would otherwise never discover on our own or using companies associated with popular commercial travel sites. Even though Rick recommended to book excursions of Sintra palaces in advance, I ignored his advice and then deeply regretted it - we missed the most beautiful sites of the city. The guides Rick recommended in Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon were great!
