I used hot water because it seems to dissolve the powder better, and it's advisable to keep more water nearby ...
If you're looking for a hair dye that you don't need to 100% commit to, then this is ideal. Basically this is a finely milled powder that is a "just add water" recipe. I originally bought two of these - one to guinea pig on myself as I wanted to use on an aunt who has severe emphysema and I had to be sure the smell wasn't going to be particularly strong or 'fumey'.All the user really needs to do is add the powder to a mixing bowl and then water to create the dye and then apply. I used hot water because it seems to dissolve the powder better, and it's advisable to keep more water nearby because if you're not fast enough you'll find the henna in your bowl begins to dry out quickly (this is also good if you find the product running out before you've finished your hair, you can thin the mix out to make it stretch a little). While the instructions call for a thick paste-like consistency, a slightly runnier consistency will still work and spread better, especially with longer hair. Henna is very difficult to work with as it dries very quickly and goes grainy like drying mud (be warned, do not use over a carpet or rug and keep some wet wipes or cloths nearby as it does get messy) - so do this in a bathroom or kitchen - when it starts to dry, little crumbs of dry henna fall everywhere. The product is slightly whiffy - very spicy and not pleasant (sort of like curry, but not sweet) but it is tolerable and it isn't fumey so ideal for people with lung conditions who can't manage conventional dye.Application is easier at the roots with a tinting brush but fingers work fine. Unlike hair dye, this does not just run and brush through hair, so it requires patience and willingness to practise.Best results are left in for a few hours under the plastic cap provided, and it's advisable to perhaps use some latex gloves as the ones provided aren't great. It does wash out easy enough, although it leaves a horrendous mess so if you don't have a shower head, it might be worth buying one or finding someone who'll let you use their shower - I wouldn't recommend washing henna out over a sink, trust me.After washing out the henna, you don't need shampoo or conditioner to finish the treatment. The hair has an odd almost dry texture to it at first until it dries which worries you a bit at first, then you find it is sleek, soft, and easy to untangle once dry. The condition of your hair vastly improves and the colour looks lovely, rich and multidimensional (it truly sparkles when the sunlight hits it) without the dye clinging to the scalp or skin.Golden brown comes out slightly chestnut at first (especially if let to oxidise for a good while) but fades to a softer golden shade later. It does look lovely and shiny and very healthy. I've used it three times now and will continue as I feel it won't wreck my hair.In my experience this didn't cover my auntie's dark grey hair that well (but wasn't on for more than an hour) but did leave a bit of a golden brown tone about it...but on my dark blonde hair it worked fabulously and looks very rich - the key is longer developing time, the longer the better, and the length of time also improves your hair condition as henna repairs broken hair a little and smooths out split ends.Highly recommend trying if you're adventurous and want to try something without committing to permanent colour.

Great conditioner, colour doubtful
Have been using henna since 2006. My hair is past shoulder length, fine and dark brown with 25% greys. This is a nicely packaged product, I like the branding and it was helpful to receive detailed instruction and disposable gloves and cap.Very fine powder which mixes easily into a paste and is easily applied with a hairdressing colourist's brush. I waited over four hours. The initial result was STUNNING condition and shine; the best I have hitherto achieved with henna. I received compliments from strangers etc. However, these results did not last and I quickly became aware that despite a long wait/application time, the colour had not really taken. The conditioning benefits are fading after a week or so. I will have to re-colour sooner than anticipated. Also this is on the more expensive end of the price range for henna, be aware that you are buying a smaller amount than other brands - 50g whereas mostly henna is sold in 100g packets. This was only enough to treat the scalp and re-growth from previous tintings, so if it was your first time with henna and you have any hair style longer than a pixie cut or short bob you would need two packets, making it quite an expensive treatment.

covers greys perfectly!
I bought this product in an attempt to cover the ever increasing amounts of grey hair on my head. I hoped would give a highlighted effect on my dark brown hair. The plan was that I would use a henna product to colour my hair which would condition it as well, rather than using a chemical dye which would ruin the condition of my hair and is potentially toxic. I had previously tried the henna cream version of this product in golden brown but I found the henna powder was easier to apply and clung more closely to the hair which gave a better result for covering my grey hairs. The plan worked beautifully. My hair had a beautiful chocolate brown colour with golden brown highlights where I had previously had white/grey hair. It feels much thicker and is very shiny and soft. I left it on longer than specified, for 3 hours as I had heard that white/grey hair which had previously been very dark in colour is harder to dye. Also I was used to leaving henna on for many hours when I used it before so the time specified did not seem enough (I think it was 1 hour which is amazing for henna powder). The colour lasted about two months. This is a fabulous product and another to add to the arsenal of must haves!

Better than I expected
Having developed a nasty allergy to hair dye, I was desperate for a solution to cover my rapidly spreading grey hair. This can make the grey hair slightly orange but the rest of my brown hair has a lovely shine. The overall effect is fairly natural looking and lasts for around a month
