how long is the actual belt

Hi Sharon I've measured the belt for you and as a big lad that worried me too, I looked for a belt to fit me for a long time so I took a chance and bought it and it was big enough to fit me the actual length after fitting a buckle is 137 or 4ft 5ins I hope this helps.

If his waist is 41 inches whay length belt should i get

42" WAIST WAS XL AND IT FITTED A TREAT. Dont forget no buckle with these you reuse your own or buy new.

If you're a 36 waist which size is best? M is 32-36 or L 36-40 is there room on the M to make another hole to make it a bit bigger if needed? thanks.

36" waist, both should be fine. I'm 34" and this gives just enough to tuck the end of the belt into the first belt loop on my jeans. Personally I would probably go for the large. To make a hold to increase the medium size would not be good but to add a hole to make the large smaller would be no problem at all. Hope this helps.
