Eagles: Up Ahead in the Distance (The Eagles Trilogy)

Flying High!
This book is a follow-up to the previous book Eagles: Before The Band and is fantastic. To say that it is comprehensive is an understatement. If you are an Eagles fan and already know a lot about the band, you will discover a wealth of information that will surprise you. The detail involved in the “band years' ' provides in-depth details for each album with ratings, background song information and the studio recording process. Plus, the connections to other writers such as Jackson Browne, JD Souther and Jack Tempchin is heavily referenced throughout the book. The content expands to other influential artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Gram Parsons, Dan Fogelberg and Poco. Content is taken from numerous sources and it is entertaining without becoming dull. There are numerous books on the band and this one fits nicely and avoids repetitiousness.

Great Eagles Timeline
My wife got books one and two of the trilogy for my birthday and Christmas. I’ve been an Eagles fan since their first album and enjoyed the books immensely. Sometimes I think I know all there is to know about the band, but was introduced to “new stuff”. The rose-colored glasses need to come off as the Eagles evolved, at times dysfunctionally, into one of America’s great bands. I wholeheartedly recommend these books and cannot wait for the third to come out.

Good read but could have used an editor and proofreader
As a long time Eagles fan, this was an interesting read that did offer some quotes and stories I’d never come across before. But what I found annoying was the repetition of anecdotes, quotes, and in one spot, an entire chapter. Pretty sure the story of how Heartache Tonight came about was shared verbatim at least three times. Also noted some glaring factual errors (Frey did sing on Souther’s You’re Only Lonely album which was released in ‘79, but we’re told he sang on the album in ‘75). With a bit of editing, proofreading, and fact-checking, this book could have been a sharp tale told with a third fewer pages. Instead, it seemed the author felt the need to include every resource and story he found, regardless of whether it was repetitious or added anything new to the subject.

informative, yet exhausting
I love the anecdotes and information in the chapters, but the author skips forward, backwards and sideways in the telling of this. I wish the stories were told chronologically, events in each year, it’s easier to follow. Instead, I feel like I’m being told stories by someone who has ADD.

Interesting
I liked it, and learned a lot about the Eagles. I felt bad for Randy Meisner, when he was struggling with hitting those high notes on Take it to the limit, but was forces to sing it anyway. I love that song, but I think it was cruel to force him to sing it. It would have been really embarrassing for him if at one point he wasn't able too. I was so happy when the band (minus Don Felder) got back together, it gave me the chance to see them live.

Interesting but could have been better
This is a good history of the music of the Eagles, very informative, but it could have been better. It's very detailed, over 1000 pages long, but does tend to ramble on & is sometimes very repetitive. Those not knowing a great deal about the band's history will learn a lot if they have the patience to stick with it. If you like the Eagles, there's a great section on them in a book by Simon Aston, called Ramblings of a Rock & Roll Nobody which is full of thoughts about the Eagles & a load of other bands...great fun!!
