The late 20th century's trite and unjust dismissal of much of Kipling's work on the absurd charge of being a facist, a racist and an admirer of imperialism, have kept many of the marvellous works on this collection out of the public domain. He certainly was neither of the first 2 and it is doubtful if he really was the third given the degree of criticism he rails at those who governed, especially in India. This subsequently damaged Kipling's reputation, his popularity and his acceptability in the modern PC world. OK "IF" was rather ludicrously voted as "The Nation's Favourite Poem", but that was largely because most people simply don't know of many if any other poems in general. The introduction to the book goes some way to providing a more balanced view of Kipling and shows these absurd charges to be nothing more than slurs. Many, I believe, make the mistake of interpreting the venacular language used by characters in the poems as representative of Kipling's own views and turn away from the brilliance of the verse. There is also an arrogant snobbery in some attitudes to the work. As with anyone with such a prodigious output (and there are not many), not all of the poems are of great stature, but most are highly readable, enjoyable, varied and there are some clearly great ones among them. SO much for so very little makes this a great buy.

Before starting this review I had a look at those who have written before me. It seems evident that many had the paper format, and were complimentary; and many had got onto the wrong review, having read only one of the stories or book included. The major negative note in the reviews of the Kindle version was that the poems (and how many of them there are!) are not formatted. Is this so unbearable considering all that is in this single volume in a collection of about 5000 pages? My disappointment is that though many of the books included start with their own index there is now direct way of finding where the book lies among the 5000 plus pages. So I am tracking down the locations at which each title starts, and then using the GoTo function to select what interests me first. And so I have been able to read Captains Courageous and am in the middle of Rewards and Fairies. I wonder if there is a way to share the results of my researches through Kindle? But I'm delighted to have so much under my fingertips, and to find out what I was missing in my youth and childhood by avoiding Kipling. Wonderful value for money, and the small amount of work is worth it!

One of England's favourite Arthur's

This is not a book you sit down and read cover to cover. It’s a book to pick up when you need a peaceful, thoughtful moment. Many of the poems have been written in his peaceful thoughtful moments. What some people call a coffee table book, always there.

Far too much here, much of Kipling's verse is rubbish. The best thing in the book is George Orwell's dissection of Kipling's verse and the man behind it. Orwell believed Kipling's greatest value was to leave posterity a clear picture of the British Raj as it was in the 19th Century and his snapshots of the lower ranks and the lower orders of British society are unrivalled, far better than those of Dickens, IMO. Orwell disdains to call Kipling a poet at all, but rather a writer of verse. Orwell points out to us that there is such a thing as good bad verse, that is, verse which is clear, direct, hits its mark and sticks with reader - a reader of any class or educational level. That was Kipling's supreme achievement.

Kipling is a genius.

I got what I thought I would get. Kipling is an important poet, who never really knocks on the door of greatness. But he can be astonishingly good at times. His keen eye and eager ears could make even the great envious. And this ability serves him good, for it induces us to read his works in spite of the sickening racial overtone.

I had no idea of the breadth and depth of Kipling's work. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of India, and of the British army in India as well as being expertly conversant with naval warfare, and when he wrote about those themes, and others, he had the faculty to explain it all in terms and ways that make even a modern-day reader understand and appreciate them. His characters have the sound of being based on real people; real soldiers, and real sailors. As well as writing an excellent and refined prose, he had a flair for portraying some themes in verse. This is not a book you'll get through in one sitting, but it will provide many, many evenings of quiet enjoyment. Perhaps the short story of his that I remember most fondly is "The Man Who Would Be King." I remember seeing the movie, which starred Sean Connery, Michael Caine, and Christopher Plummer, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie hewed very close to the story line laid down by Kipling. If you have an interest in Kipling, or in the British Army, the Royal Navy, India, or that period in history, you'll be pleased with the perspective on those places, those institutions, and those times that this volume affords.

Agil, entretenida, hasta cómica, su escritura reunida da la oportunidad de conocer no sólo sus grandes éxitos sino, por ejemplo, su poesía . El precio para Kindle es inmejorable, si te gusta leer, no te lo puedes perder.

Tapa blanda blanda, es apenas cartulina, y sin embargo es un libro grueso, tendré que forrarlo para que me aguante al menos el tiempo que tarde en leerlo. Y quien lo metió en el sobre le dobló la cubierta y varias hojas de atrás, muy descuidados. El contenido excelente claro.
