The Black outer ring rotates around the yellow bit. So you need to grasp the yellow cross member to hold the yellow bit steady and use the knob pn the black bit to turn the outer wheel so its rolling the cable. The design is such that you can do it all holding it in your hands or holding it steady on a flat bit of ground or table....In other words the yellow bit remains static and the black bit rotates using the handle...

What is the internal width of the real? I need to wind up a 50mm flat tape. Thanks in advance.

I have just measured mine and the width at the core is 40mm due to 2 small shoulders 10mm deep x 5mm wide. So I suggest you pack out the core to the top of the shoulders - you will then have the 50mm width you require. Hope this helps

Sorry, don't quite understand the question. The black knob is attached to the reel so that by holding the yellow centre it is possible to turn the black reel.

Is this any good for storing a large number of christmas lights (480 LED) or is it for something completely different?!

This would be work well and be more than adequate for that number of lights. I made a cardboard reel for the same job and deploying the lights and reeling them up again tangle free is a doddle!
