Is this covered by usa canon warranty and eligible for service and repair by canon usa, as one answer says not authorized dealer?

Also, for extra fun, this gray market lens is over-priced by a nearly 70% mark-up by Amazon themselves (integrity much?) Canon direct's website sells it for $2999, although the thing is on back-order until rapture, but they won't gouge you.

Anyone compared this wide open at f2.0 against the 24-70mm wide open at f2.8 for sharpness across the frame? Thanks.

I have read reviews on Canon Rumors with this information. There is more to lense quality than sharpness across the frame. Think about aromatic aberrations, lens flare, and a multitude of other aspects of lens that combine to make a great lens. If you are concerned about the best of the best just go to primes. The RF 50 f1.2 will give you the best of the best, yet you have to zoom with your feet.

I'm considering this as a second camera for indoor sports (e.g. basketball). how fast is the tracking and autofocus compared? my body is an r6.

Completely wrong lens for your use. Low light consider the RF 70-200 f/2.8, more light consider the f/4.0. If your serious about sport photography consider the R3 body.

Is there any tripod mount for other lenses that can be adapted for this so that it will be better balanced on a lightweight tripod and small ballhead?

Yes there are, this one for example from amazon https://www.amazon.com/iShoot-Compatible-28-70mm-Support-Arca-Swiss/dp/B08L4XK8WT/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=canon+28-70+tripod+ring&qid=1632363814&sr=8-4
