A spice commonly called star anise, star anise, star anise seed, Chinese star anise or badiam that closely resembles anise in flavor is obtained from the star-shaped pericarp of the fruit of Illicium verum which are harvested just before ripening. Star anise oil is a highly fragrant oil used in cooking, perfumery, soaps, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and skin creams. About 90% of the world's star anise crop is used for extraction of shikimic acid, a chemical intermediate used in the synthesis of oseltamivir.

My bag of Anise was very low quality
I got a bag full of what seems to be immature old pieces - hardly any whole seeds in the hulls. Very disappointed.

Expected whole stars, got pieces.
The images displayed for this item suggests that the package consists of whole stars. The package we got was did not appear to have any whole stars. Still usable but only if a cheesecloth spice bag is used. I have not cooked with this product. It might be wonderful but it will have to dig itself out of a hole.

Amazing flavor!
Arrived quickly and very generous amount for the price. Anise seed has an amazing flavor like nothing else but it is very hard to find in our area, we usually have to go to multiple shops and sometimes still can't find it. This way we are set for a long time. As others have said they are not all intact but we are not needing them to be decorative so that some of them are broken doesn't matter.

Can't return so choose a different brand!
The bag was open and had packing tape layered around it. The product had no fragrance at all. The original bag was dusty and holes poked from the anise

Great flavor, poor packaging and quantity
The 8oz is actually 2x 3.5 oz bags, which is fine, just badly listed. The packaging is cheap and won't lock in freshness in the long run, and many are broken, but the product itself is fresh and of high quality.
