Amazing reference!
This book is a deeply researched document on the early history of settlers in the Edisto Island area of South Caroline, where I have some early ancestors. The writer seems to be very aware of the racial injustices of the time in this work, not glossing over it and encouraging additional research to reflect the Black community. So I acquired a second book on that topic as an accompaniment.

The basics of the island and it’s history
Mediocre and somewhat boring. A few interesting good item but too much on family and individuals,

My favorite summer vacation site in South Carolina!
The history of this wonderful Island is researched in depth here, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Edisto Beach is my favorite summer spot! My family used to have great times there, finding those fossil shark's teeth, catching crabs and eating them too, and all the other great things to do there.

The History is Very Thorough
This book is a wonderful addition to the information you can get on Edisto Island. This is definitely a history of the Island and not a tour guide. I bought this book to help me find out more about my family history. What I love about this book is that the author has taken many of the stories I have gotten from other books and put them into one all-encompassing book. The history is very thorough! Of course I wish there was more about where all of the main families came from to get to Edisto Island, but I can understand why he didn't do all of that. The history of Edisto Island is rich and full of interesting facts. I am so happy that Charles Spencer took on this project and delivered the information so well. I have gotten a wealth of information about my family from his book. There is a second book about the history of the island from 1860-2006. I highly recommend that one as well.
