Death Wish

I had never heard of this film before watching it, so going in I had no idea what to expect. But I was very impressed, if you want a gritty revenge flick from the 70s then this is it, but be warned, you will never look at Jeff Goldblum in the same way.

What can I say? Just a great film.

All in all, a disappointing film, given the subject matter and actors. There is the supprising appearance of a youthful Jeff Goldblum as a gang member in the film shocking opening scenes. Overall, it has not worn well in time or story, it is essential a revenge film, rather than a horror film. Although, Michael Winner turn on the gore and does give it the horror treatment. One of the worst scenes is the attack by a gang on a old men in the street and then the brutal slaying of the gang members by Charles Bronson character. The film Biblical message of a "eye for an eye " is narrow and one sided rather than reasoned, although Bronson tries to give his character a human, he is really without any ethical value, the film is just a brutal western set in the urban modern city that more a relic of another time in the past not the present .

Firsty a confession. When this movie first came out in theaters I was to too young to see it but I do remember the storm of negative reviews from critics as well as its popular appeal to moviegoers.In the 40 years since its release, several things have become clear.Firstly, Charles Bronson COULD act. In this movie his slow progression from grieving widower to reluctant vigilante is well portrayed. As well as his initial revulsion following his first shooting/murder. So is Charles Bronson's acting wooden? Sometimes in other movies yep. But I think he definitely is committed to showing the range of his characters emotions & reactions to the world around him.Secondly, Michael Winner is not a great director, even with strong dramatic material to work with. Probably not a major revelation. :) While the movie does work on its own terms, and you can follow events through to their ambiguous conclusion the movie contains a LOT of missed opportunities, not helped by a largely immobile camera & workmanlike editing.Apparently during development of this movie Sidney Lumet was attached as a director but unfortunately left to work on Serpcio instead. It would have been fascinating to see how he would have used the same material to make a movie.Regardless of what might have been, the movie works on its terms. Just don't expect to see a lot of subtle character interaction or layered development of the moral conundrums posed by Bronson's vigilante antics.Thirdly, the movie should definitely be seen alongside other movies dealing with police corruption and crime made during the same period like Serpico and Dirty Harry. Interesting period when big questions were being raised in public life about trust in figures of authority and institutions following high profile failings such as Watergate and Vietnam.So am I saying you should watch this movie? Yep, but probably after having seen Dirty Harry and also Serpico. Death Wish is a good film and worth watching as it still has a powerful message but it's not IMHO in the same class as the other two better movies.

Bronson is on top form again in Death Wish, a tough gritty thriller which sees Bronson deliver brutal justice to a group of intruders/rapists who violate and attack his loved ones. Whilst there are some scenes that are tough to watch the resulting justice delivered to the thugs provides some great entertainment. Would recommend to all Bronson film fans.

Everyone should know this is the five star revenge movie where Charlie Bronson gets to do the world a big favour by wiping out numerous Muggers, Freaks and, er, Punks. With just a little help from the N.Y.P.D. and Nigel Tufnel of course. The only doubt appears to be over which is the best version to get, as the standard UK DVD seems to be quite poorly presented.Well, I took some helpful advice and went for this Dutch Film World DVD Import from, we may assume, Holland. And I can confirm it does have the full run time of 93 minutes, the print is very good and clean (once it gets going) and the ratio is definitely genuine wide screen. Although I can't confirm whether it's 1:1.78 or 1:1.85 etc, but it is certainly not just a stretched out 4:3. Overall the picture quality is very good indeed and I wouldn't expect anything better until they do a Blu Ray restoration. Possibly not even then. This includes the Original English stereo soundtrack without any subtitles. And don't let the fact it says 16 Cert on the box put you off, either. Remember that's a Broad-minded Dutch 16! In Holland, I guess they're pretty relaxed one way or another.The fact that it's going for only about a fiver at the moment may also help in your decision. So, don't be afraid anymore. Go call the Vigilante - He'll turn the place upside down...

This 1974 original directed by Michael Winner, has a filmic quality and does not suffer from the overuse of DNR found on other releases from this era. The transfer is excellent, damage and other anomalies have been removed and leaves a crisp transfer to enjoy, my only complaint is the audio which is presented in two channel only, using DTS-HD Master Audio.The only extra is the original 1974 trailer of the film.This is a film that takes unique look at mid 70's New York and it's dark underbelly of crime and follows a decent Hard-working citizen willing to take on those who pray on innocent people on the dark streets of New York City.

The movie Death Wish was still very potent and strong and very realistic, but it is still a very good movie and I enjoyed it. Thank You Amazon.
