I don't know but I change mine every 4 -8 weeks

can these be used for viafosa distillers the new model with stainless steel spout?

Ahh yes well I've been using them in that same exact model and all seems good, just make sure to flush one whole distilled water process after first putting the new activated carbon bag into stainless spout, as the first cycle comes out a bit grey black ish due to loose carbon particles. Hope this helps 

How do you know when the filter needs changing? Is there something visible?

On the packet I bought it says to change every 1-3 months. There is no actual indicator on the distiller to tell you when they need changing unfortunately. so I do mine roughly every 8-9 weeks as I personally think 3 month a bit too long.
