As used on Cervantes A1 courses - not for self-study
This is the workbook Instituto Cervantes use for teaching A1 courses. Be aware that there is a newer edition out. They may be switching to that later, but at the time of review (June 2021) this is the one they are using.Be aware this is intended for classroom teaching. The book does *not* have the answers to the exercises in it and all the guidance notes are in Spanish. It is not for self-study and can't be used that way (though it does make for good revision). There is an audio CD included with all the audio exercises. If you are doing the courses online via Zoom, then keep the CD handy as often audio/video clips from the teachers PC don't play well via Zoom links. The video content is available from the publisher officially via their Youtube channel as well.To be blunt, the book is expensive for what it is but that's the way with all these materials. I worked as an EFL teacher and we had the same complaint about EFL materials. The quality isn't great - the paper is quite thin and binding is a bit fragile, so don't fold the book back on itself, and use soft pencil for any notes. That said, the basic curriciulm is presented well, and the grammar summaries for each unit are well thought out and easy to follow - I like that. The back also has conjugations for the most common irregular verbs as well. While Cervantes don't specifically mention it for the A1 courses, I'd strongly recommend getting a decent English<>Spanish dictionary to do with it, as there is none in the book at all (as I said, it's 100% in Spanish). I recommend the Collins Spanish Dictionary & Grammar (ISBN: 0008241392).

Good, not perfect for an individual learner
Good, not perfect for an individual learner, but I'm managing. Mostly it is intended for a class working together. However, there is a lot of material in 'mas ejercicios' at the back that is intended for people working on their own.

Spanish version is more helpful
Excellent book and accompanying CD. We were advised by our teacher to buy the Spanish version as it was the best way of learning the language - getting used to just using Spanish and no "helpful" English translations.

This book is intended to be used as a text book for language schools
This book really does need to go with a Spanish school of learning and indeed it is the set text book for one of the leading schools. On its own the book has a lot of exercises, it is loaded with grammar and covers numerous situations. It is only in Spanish. In this version there is no English at all. Used in conjunction with one of the appropriate schools, who provide more information and support, the book is one of the better text books but as a stand alone it is difficult for a beginner to use. For example, the exercises about time are very scant because the school provides most of the details. I have given it three stars because I believe a beginner needs to be warned that it is not really suitable for use by its self. For those whose school chooses this book and provides the support it is good.
