High cost item when you consider the batteries
These Wilkie talkies do work, although not up to 3km unless in direct line of sight and on a good day ;-).There are 4 handsets and they are easy to configure and use. The down side is that the handsets are not provided with a recharger or rechargeable batteries and therefore prospective buyers need to ensure that they purchase Nimh batteries and a charger (significant additional cost) or be prepared to purchase alkaline batteries at even greater expense in the longer term. The set I received were supplied with a set of batteries for each handset, however, priced at almost £60 on 4th October 2015, I think that they just scrape into the 3 star category based on high price and running costs, tempered by the fact that kids will love the colours and they are quite robustly made.Thinking of purchasing a set for a family. Look at the alternatives with a charger; in the longer term, particularly with children using them, you won't regret it.

Brilliant!
Brilliant set of walkie talkies which clip easily onto your belt or are small enough to place in your pocket. The different colours are great as it means we don't have to keep fighting with the kids as to who has which one. The range on them is phenomenal - 3km! Very easy to use and with a selection of channels and ringing tones!

Tiny walkie talkies, with great features but limited range.
Ideal for outdoor activities such as camping trips, the Utratec mini walkie talkies really are mini! Measuring just 12cm by 4.5cm they are small enough to fit in the tiniest of pockets, they come packed with features including 8 channels and 38 selectable CTCSS tones for added privacy. Outside they work well over short distances but the range is severely reduced when used from inside buildings. We have previously used Binatone Latitude 100 Twin Walkie Talkie which have less features but a markedly better range. The handsets are cheerfully coloured and robustly built, with a bright backlight and decent volume for such a small unit. These would be great for outdoor activities over clear terrain and small distances but are unsuitable for emergency or safety communications, over terrain with features such as valleys, or in built up areas.

Easy communication for any scenario where you need to keep in touch, especially for outdoor pursuits
I am very impressed with this set of walkie-talkies.We live in a rural village with no mobile phone reception and sometimes need to keep in touch with family the equivalent of about 8 doors away or across a 4-acre meadow. Rather than knocking on doors or making endless trips across the meadow to relay messages, these walkie-talkies are the answer.Unlike many walkie-talkies, including our previous pair, these use standard AAA batteries and, despite the recommendation to use alkaline batteries, they also work well with rechargeables which is perfect for use outdoors and traveling when we don’t have immediate access to mains-powered chargers – hence we were attracted by this feature. We use rechargeable AAA batteries and carry a spare set to replace them when needed. It was also pleasing to note that batteries can be quickly replaced with no need to remove the belt clip. They are stated as having a 3km/2mile range – certainly they work about half a mile apart between houses in our village and further outdoors with fewer properties in their path. When travelling in convoy, we carry them then and have remained in reliable contact with other vehicles at 1.5 miles apart if one of us gets lost or stops en-route. We also use them to remain in contact when out cycling or walking including out in some of the most remote areas of Wales such as Plynlimon where there is no mobile signal or other means of contact. In some environments, such as dense woodland, the range is more limited, as we would expect, but they have never let us down. Other locals have seen us using them and, equally frustrated by the lack of mobile phone signal, have expressed interest in following our lead and using a set themselves. They work from one house to the next and although they are better used outdoors with fewer obstacles including thick stone walls, their signal will transmit between properties. Voices have been clear and recognisable and, thanks to the 8 channels, we’ve been able to select channels not used by others so haven’t had any interference at all.Build quality is good, I like their compact size (8cm excl antenna x 4cm wide) and we liked the range of colours which make a refreshing change from the usual choice of black or... black. They’re also much more compact than the Binatone 150 set we have been using for the last few years, the display is much clearer, more informative (displays channel, volume, transmit/receive icon rather than just the channel as many do) and there’s a backlight too for use in dark conditions. The supplied manual is helpful and informative, is easy to follow makes complete sense and, like a breath of fresh air, there is no trace of any Chinglish. We have found the walkie talkies to be the perfect method for keeping in touch and relaying messages at no cost (other than initial outlay on handsets and rechargeable batteries) at home in our village, when out walking and cycling and they are the ideal and practical solution for overcoming the problems caused by lack of mobile phone signal in a localised area. They’re a very good purchase for anyone in a scenario where you need to be able to be contacted – eg an ill person can call for help from a carer who is no longer tied to being within shouting distance, children can be summoned home by parents at mealtimes, outdoor groups can use them for monitoring group members or reporting an accident and requesting help. We much prefer this set of four to our previous Binatone set and wouldn’t be without them now.
