Hood's Tennessee Campaign: The Desperate Venture of a Desperate Man (Civil War Series)

Fantastic read !
This is one of the best written, comprehensive and unbiased books on the battles in and around Columbia, Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville, TN, and the retreat/chase of Hood's and Thomas' armies I've read. Knight provides just enough detail to keep the reader up-to-date on the leaders and units involved in the various actions, yet not so much information that the reader gets lost trying to keep tract of the participants. In my opinion, this is a MUST read for any student of the American Civil War and in particular, the Battles of Columbia, Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville. But you didn't know much about Generals Thomas and Hood before you read this book, you'll have no excuse toward not knowing about them afterward.

Adequate for beginners.
A good overview of the campaign but fewer details than I expected.

Illuminating
I knew vaguely about this battle and General Hood. The author presents the evolution of this unmitigated disaster eloquently. While the term “Pyrrhic Victory” is not to be found in this book, Hood certainly achieved one at Franklin, TN.

Was General Hood really drug free?
I enjoy most books about the Civil War and have read a number recently defending Gen. Hood's actions. But, this book clearly illustrates that Hood sacrificed a lot of men with his head-on attacks against great odds from Atlanta through Nashville. Still enjoyed book but I feel sorry for all those that spend time defending Hood.

Franklin, Tennessee Tourist Primer No. 2
Read "Hood's Tennessee Campaign" AFTER reading the thinner, "The Battle of Franklin", and both BEFORE you visit Franklin, Tennessee. Both books are by the same local author.

Thank you very much.

Was Hood As Bad A General As Some Say
thought provoking - asks questions (i.e. what options did Hood have) and provides counter arguments to the position that Hood was a reckless, drug-addled general who destroyed his army.
