Many work hard on good posture and better walking and running alignment, but it’s critical to understand how what you put on your feet each day can play a bigger role in the function of your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and spine than you might realize. By applying the principles in this book, you will be able to restore your foundation and prevent dysfunction. ―Ray McClanahan, DPM, inventor of Correct Toes Biomechanist and author of Simple Steps to Foot Pain Relief , Katy Bowman offers walkers, runners, and health professionals alike clear, accessible lessons on how the shape of shoes can play a role in painful feet, knees, and hips―and what to do about it. When we have painful feet and weak ankles it seems like stiff, supportive shoes are the answer, but this solution can be temporary, especially if our issues stem from foot and leg weakness. In short, humans come with great foot technology, we just need to learn how to use it. Minimal footwear―shoes that protect your feet while still letting them move freely―is gaining traction (get it?). Being barefoot is a natural human movement, but research shows simply kicking off our shoe-shackles and releasing our feet into the wild can result in injury. Whole Body Barefoot will help you safely and effectively transition to minimal footwear, reaping the enormous benefits of freeing your feet without injuring yourself along the way. Whole Body Barefoot presents: 25 exercises to create strong, supple, feel-better feet The mechanics of bunions and pronation How to strengthen weak ankles and arches How to figure out your true shoe-size The importance of walking on natural surfaces― Vitamin Texture! With clear, science-based explanations, Bowman lays out the ways in which conventional shoes and artificial environments leave us with sedentary feet as well as the steps necessary to restore lost foot function, and improve health…naturally!

Informative resource.
This book is really helping me transition from heeled shoes to minimal footwear. It's immensely practical, well informed from biomechanics and yet fun and not stuffy. The pictures are quite grainy but good enough to know what you need to do for the exercise.

Just what I wanted!
Felt like 'Born to Run' was more of a cult than backed by science and a progressive introduction to minimalist footwear. This book blew me away in how concise but information packed it was. Read it over 2 sessions. Got plenty of exercises to introduce now. Enjoy

getting a bit repetative
The information here is repeated in Katy's other books. Clearly feet are important in the grand scheme of things so if this is the only book of Katy's that you read then you will be very happy with it - lots of good tips and exercises and the importance of transitioning to minimal footwear. However - being a fan I have several books with the same information - hence the 4 stars.

Makes so much sense!
Having recently sustained a serious sprained ankle, I spent my incarceration searching for why I, as a relatively fit and healthy person, had turned my ankle so easily on an uneven surface. The answers are all here!My barefoot shoes are on the way, and the practical exercises logged and started. I now have a keen interest in body mechanics, so will be reading Katy's other books too.

Thank you Katy Bowman for helping me to walk confidently again
I've read a number of Katy Bowman's books - all great. I also listen to her podcasts - hugely informative. Aged nearly 60, with nearly 20 years of significant foot pain, she has transformed my world. Walking had become very difficult and x-rays, MRIs etc had not helped. The best the NHS offered was an insole, which caused even more pain. Katy's books helped me self-diagnose all that was wrong with my body, the result of a lifetime at a desk, at a computer, wearing shoes I thought sensible but actually still not good (low but not fully flat, and not gripping my foot, causing it to work too hard in the wrong places). I now wear Vibram Five Fingers most of the time and when I need ordinary shoes (such as walking boots), I insert CorrectToes between my toes, to spread them. The result... my feet and toes are getting stronger all the time and thus resisting pain. The transformation is incredible. Thank you Katy for all that you do.

I love this woman's work
Fabulous. I love this woman's work, so freeing and empowering. Not many people are sharing this message. Helps you to really understand the way your feet work in relation to the rest of your body and how to keep them healthy. I have downloaded some of her exercises from restorative exercise web site - great value for money and hugely informative. Give your feet a treat.

Walk barefoot back to health.
This book was recommended to my wife by a friend, who then asked me to pick it up for her, so I jumped online and found it from Amazon EU S.a.r.L. at a great price. The delivery was very swift, and although I had ordered two by mistake, the wife liked it so much, we gave the second copy to the mother in law, and she loved it too.I had always been a fan of walking barefoot in the grass, so I also read the book too, and found it fantastic. Since then, we have recommend this book to so many of our friends.A must read for anyone who loves to look at both sides of a story.

Great instructive booj
This my third book from this author and I'm so glad I got it. There are lots of corrective exercises in it and good photos for visual learners like me. I've already started some of them and am reaping the benefits already. My feet and legs don't hurt as quickly as they use to during a long walk. When I do get pain or discomfort, doing them bring relief for the following day.

Teuer aber sehr gut.
Super Buch. Vier Sterne weil, das Buch ist teuer und Bowman wiederholt sich in kurz form zum Schluss (ein viertel des Buchs) und eine gute sechstel des Buchs sind Webseiten und Vorschläge für Barfuß Schuhe.

A must-read, even if you don't care about the topic of barefoot shoes.
If you aren't interested in barefoot shoes going into this book, you probably will be by the halfway point. However, what makes the book so good is the light Bowman sheds on the anatomy of the foot and its impact on the entire body. The issues surrounding the barefoot shoe movement—from the proposed benefits to the criticism—are handled with honesty, tact, and scientific knowledge. Both sides are right, according to the author, who breaks down the "whys" in easy to follow explanations. You won't look at your shoes—whatever you choose—in quite the same way again.Much more than just a discussion of the barefoot topic, Bowman offers a strategy for transitioning out of traditional footwear into barefoot shoes in a manner that supports and benefits the body, minimizing any health risk. But really, all this is just a launching point into her broader point, which is that our modern lifestyle is producing undesirable physiological changes that impact our health—and there is something we can do about it!With Bowman's foot and leg exercises, which are easily done almost anywhere in a minimal amount of time, we can begin to reverse the ill-effects of our sedentary, screen-oriented lifestyles and correct typical kinetic chain misalignments that affect us more profoundly than we may realize. Even an active person such as myself can derive great benefit from Bowman's perspective. I have been doing her exercises regularly for several months now, and unquestionably my quality of life has increased. I have shared the exercises with family (who pronounced them "life-changing") and incorporated some of them into my group fitness classes. I can tell when a participant has been doing them at home, because their flexibility and balance through the foot and leg increases noticeably over time. Thanks to this book, I now direct many people to Katy Bowman's "Nutritious Movement" blog. And several more of her books are on my TBR list!

Life Changing
I was chatting with an acquaintance and expressed some difficulties I was having with plantar fasciitis. She mentioned she had experienced the same problems for over 30yrs before discovering Katy. She went on to explain more about alignment, stretching, strengthening and minimalist shoes. All information she had learned from this book.I’m self employed and often put up to 25k steps in a day. I need my feet to work! For 3yrs, I’ve struggled with excruciating pain due to my plantar fasciitis. I’ve spent a small fortune on supportive shoes and orthotics. None of them made a lasting impact. It’s only been 2mos since I started following Katy’s advice and I am now pain free. These concepts are with me for life.Thank you, Katy.
