Excellent item. Little effort required to cut branches. No danger of breaking these loppers.
This is an excellent item. The (geared) ratchet system has two advantages over the standard telescopic lopper. 1) Very little effort in needed to cut branches as each squeeze of the handles moves the cutting blade a small fraction. 2) As the handles are under a tiny load there is no danger of bending them. Very ingenuous.

The best loppers ever.
Probably the best purchase I've ever made! I had a large hedge that had become overgrown, it had become about 12 ft high, I cut it back down to 6ft using these. It cut through branches like butter, I couldn't believe how strong and tough they are. I love the ratchet mechanism, it takes a lot of the effort of chopping away, and I really enjoyed using them. The handles extend and extending the handles is very easy to use, a simple twist to extend, twist back and they are locked in place. The handles are also very easy to grip. After using them to cut over a hundred individual branches, they still perform like new, so they are durable. They are well worth the price, excellent value for money.

Good, but only for heavy duty work
I wanted some heavy duty loppers for some large branches and these were ideal. The ratchet mechanism worked well and helped cut through some thick branches. However, they are not so good at chopping up thinner branches or where the branch was not firmly fixed. So, they were poor at chopping up the larger branches produced from the initial cut above into manageable pieces. I am still pleased with them, but would not recommended them for general work if what you are looking for is essentially a larger pair of secateurs.

Fantastic bit of kit
I got this because my back garden trees are getting a little unruly and I don't trust myself with power tools. Really easy to use, they can get though quite substantial branches. I think the official maximum branch thickness is 5cm diameter but I'm pretty sure I've got through stuff thicker, the rachet design making it so easy. The telescopic design makes it easy to reach higher branches. On a couple of occasions the handle have unlocked and extended themselves but that's more than likely user area! It's a good weight. I'm a woman in my late 40s and can use it without issue. Feels durable although time will tell. Small enough to pop in to a cupboard when it's not being used. Great value for money and the garden is looking much tidier!

Great loppers
Very sharp and very sturdy, it was perfect for cutting down my very overgrown buddleia which had some quite thick branches. The ratchet made it so much easier to cut through. Would definitely recommend. They were quite heavy but this obviously goes hand in hand with the quality.

Easy to use and works well.
Impressed with approximately 2 day delivery. Have tried it on some of the biggest solid branches quoted as it's highest range, coped extremely well without resorting to the extended handles for more leverage. Safety latch is a good addition not found on similar loppers.

Brilliant - even if you’ve not a lot of upper body strength.
I’m a 65 year old woman and I don’t have great upper body strength, but I still managed to cut this huge pile of branch trimmings in my large garden. I’ve included photos to show the overgrowth on the patio before and after clearing, and the large pile of trimmings I cleared (I’m now going to put these through the wood chipper and will use them to fill my new compost bays). The ratchet system is really easy to use. You have to pump the handles back and forth several times to get the blade to close, but the ratchet locks the blade and holds the branch for the next cut. I’ve managed to get through some quite thick branches with little effort. Opening the handles wide releases the blade. I haven’t tried it with the handles extended yet, but I’ve had good reach with them as they are. The loppers feel very solid and robust. I love that they lock shut for storage. Nothing but good things to say about this tool and I would highly recommend them.

Excellent loppers with awesome cutting power.
I'm very badly disabled so my limits are without a doubt significantly lower than the full capabilities of these loppers and all I could manage was a single test cut to take a photo. I managed to cut through a branch roughly 43mm (1.7 inch) despite the digital calipers claiming 45mm. But, I still wouldn't be able to use them myself in any capacity. I just can't stand and work with tools as it's far too painful for me with severe spinal issues and I need to use walking sticks or crutches for support as well. What I can very occasionally and briefly help with is shortening the serious branches already on the floor that others have cut down with these loppers to fit them into the gardening bin. Obviously, said branches are considerably thinner towards the middles and ends so I use a set of smaller bladed, lighter Draper heavy duty telescopic anvil loppers I also have here. These Spear & Jackson heavy duty ratchet loppers are for the seriously thick and tougher stuff and they easily cope with it and they are surprisingly well balanced when the handles aren't extended. Branches of 50mm (2 inch) are not a problem for these ratchet loppers and even those getting longer in the tooth who are still relatively fit and healthy can quite easily cut through 40-45mm (1.5 - 1.7 inch) branches and still find these loppers reasonably easy to work with. The fit, young and healthy could very easily cut through 50mm (2 inch) and more, although this is at the top end of their intended use and repeatedly cutting much more than 50mm branches would seriously increase the wear and tear or end up damaging them, ideally a pruning saw or chainsaw would be better there. If you only need to tackle a handful of the considerably thicker branches however, and for the most part you're lopping off annual growth that you keep on top of, these loppers are absolutely ideal. I'm completely reliant upon the help of family, friends and neighbours to help with my gardens so the least I could do was make their lives easier by having these tools available here for them to use. They've done so well that they're frequently borrowed now too and earn high praise every time. It's bad enough having to be so reliant upon others for help as it is without them having to struggle to actually help me too, these loppers are complete game changers and have certainly made life much easier for those that so graciously help me out. The lock is also very handy for storing these loppers with the handles closed. The twist mechanism for locking and unlocking the telescopic handles are a little small and fiddly, but to my mind if your hands can't cope with them then chances are you're not really going to want to be working with these loppers period!! All in all, excellent tools. *** EDIT. I've noticed from observing others that the handles need to be almost fully opened to engage the ratchet and continue cutting, making them quite awkward to use in a cramped or confined space. To disengage the ratchet and fully re-open the blade, the handles need to be opened to the maximum. With the handles extended both actions require a lot of travel. It's a shame they couldn't set the ratchet to engage without the handles having to travel as far. In most cases this shouldn't be an issue but if you're specifically purchasing these loppers for use in an area where your arms may be cramped for space you may struggle. This is the ONLY drawback I can find with these loppers however!! 5/5. I've been told to highly recommend them by those that are really using them to their full potential on my behalf. For their price too, excellent tools to have when required.

Great tool if you need to cut thicker branches
I was really surprised at how well these cut branches. When I unpacked them I immediately went out in the yard to test them out. I kept cutting increasingly thicker branches and saplings and nothing would stop them. Basically, if it's wood and it fits in the jaws, they will cut it. These have replaced my chain saw for cleaning up in the woods bordering my yard. One important thing to note is that since they are ratcheting loppers, they function a little differently than traditional loppers. Opening the handles fully releases the jaws to their full open position and then it takes four cranks of the handle to cut through a branch. Open the handles and the blade pops open, four cranks to close it back to the anvil. There's no other way to operate them, so they're not very useful for small branches where you don't need the power of the ratchet action. If you don't need to cut thicker branches, the three cranks to close down to cut a small branch will be frustrating. I bought a pair of small 15" loppers from the local orange store to complement these and use on the little stuff. Bypass loppers will serve many people better than these, but if you need the cutting force, these are awesome. Another great feature is the side plates that enclose the ratchet mechanism. I've used other loppers with an exposed compound gear action that often got hung up in the branches, especially when trying to chop branches to condense a pile of brush. With the mostly smooth outside surface of these loppers that hasn't been an issue. The extension handles allow you to reach higher branches, but again be aware that the handles must be fully opened to operate the ratchet, so it can be a stretch if you're trying to reach something very high. Fortunately the handle locks were easy to use and held securely without any issues. One more tip - since these are anvil loppers, the handle with the anvil remains stationary against the branch and the handle with the cutting blade moves toward it. This is different from bypass loppers where you squeeze both handles and both jaws cut through the branch to meet in the middle. When I adjusted the placement and the force on the handles to account for this difference in motion it made using them much easier. Overall, if you need the power these are hard to beat. If you're trimming a bunch of smaller branches a set of bypass loppers will work better.

These are fantastic! Can’t recommend them highly enough. Easy, quick, and effective on very thick branches with very little effort.
