What precautions should I take before doing a breath alcohol test?

Wait 30 mins after drinking alcohol, and 20 mins after eating, smoking, vaping, brushing teeth, using mouthwash or chewing gum. Residue in the mouth or throat can contaminate your results. Test when breathing normally, not out of breath.

I took two readings in close succession and got different results, why is this?

Two tests taken back to back can differ because the first blow temporarily clears alcohol from the lungs, so the breath alcohol level hasn’t stabilised for the second test. Wait a few minutes, keeping in mind your alcohol level can change.

How long do I need to blow for?

Usually 4 to 8 seconds. It takes a deep lung sample (about 1.2 litres) to ensure the best accuracy, and built in flow sensors measure the breath volume and adjust the required blowing time based on how hard you blow.

I've been drinking all day and have a lower reading than I expected, why is this?

All devices are calibrated, so readings are trustworthy. The body clears about 1 unit of alcohol per hour; if you’ve been drinking steadily over a long period you may be eliminating alcohol as fast as you consume it, giving a lower reading.

My unit won't power on or starts but turns itself off, what is wrong?

Most power issues are battery related. Fit brand new, high quality batteries the correct way round. Weak batteries can’t supply the high current needed and may cause the unit to shut off. If it persists, contact AlcoSense Support.
