This DVD is a happy mixed-bag of the modern and the magically mystical, set in Ireland with its breathtakingly beautiful country vistas and seashore, and the storybook presentation of a modern/magical conflict that culminates in the "True Values of Life, Love, and Laughter" winning out over desperate circumstances at the very end. All the characters are well developed--Randy Quaid's performance showing him to be a truly talented actor as he usually is--and with the supporting cast of seasoned and similar stuff--plus a few new faces who did well in their roles. The special effects I give 4-Stars but taking into account that this film is dated, they were spot-on for the time it was filmed. The sets were first class believable with the costume designers/makeup artists doing a fabulous job for this film. There's humor, mischief being made, pathos and sorrow, two modern and magical romances (a strong "Romeo and Juliet" influence in the film), with fighting and death in the Fairy Kingdom--the latter reversed by the powers of The Grand Banshee (Whoopee Goldburg) at the climax, along with a true "gusher" of a surprise ending [all gold is NOT yellow] to leave you smiling as the film "fades to black"...literally! The "Kid in you" will love this film--I guarantee it.

I couldn't believe the two negative reviews I saw posted, but was heartened to see the rest were overwhelmingly positive. They should be. This is a lovely, tender, humorous bit of fantasy. The acting is superb, the special effects are some of the best I have seen, and the director shows a deft hand in presenting a good script. This is a movie that stays with you long after you see it, and you often wish there were such an enchanted land. Well, there is, and you can visit it every time you watch this movie. Thanks for making this type of movie and for the wonderful job you did on it. Don't let the snobs and other nay-sayers discourage you. The vast majority of us loved it and want more!

I saw this movie years ago when the Hallmark Channel first came out. It's cute and funny. They acting is what you would expect from a TV Special, but the scenery is stellar. It has everything we've come to love and expect from a St. Patty's Day movie. It's basically a version of Romeo and Juliette with leprechauns as the starring characters. Very funny and cute.

Ok, perhaps this is a bit campy for a movie. The acting is not the best by most of the actors. They do good, not great. The script is somewhat silly. But, it takes me back to seeing it in my teens. It has the 90's feel to it and all the hope of young love still was alive. There are notable actors in it too. I think it's worth a single watch. It is an innocent movie good for families. It has Ireland in it. And, a happy fairytale ending. I do not see this as a must-watch-again movie, though.

As a fantasy fiction author, the only problem with this movie is it's the abbreviated version. The full version, over 4 hours long, occasionally is on TV. This abbreviated version costs much of the magic and music to fit it to size, but the essence of the story is still there. Fairies dueling with fairies over an imagined slight that will cost them everything, with two humans unwittingly caught up in the battle, that will make or break their own romance. The characters, animation and story line are superb, and I would highly recommend it.

I first saw this movie as a kid when my grandmother may or may not have recorded it off of the tv (I miss VHS). I just about wore the tape out watching this movie. I finally got around to getting it on DVD and couldn't be happier! It's just such a delightful little film. There are no huge gory battles or intense action scenes. Instead, it's just one of those feel good movies that could be cheesy but somehow manages not to be. It makes me want to try to find my own magic in Ireland.

I ordered the item in case it might be universal "Region 0" or for Australia "Region 4", but when it arrived "Region 1" was clearly marked on the jacket so I couldn't use it as I don't have a universal player.

Für diese Produktion wurden eine Reihe von namhaften Schauspielern engagiert wie Whoopi Goldberg (Die Farbe Lila, 1985; Ghost - Nachricht von Sam, 1990; Star Trek - Treffen der Generationen, 1994; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, 2014), Randy Quaid (Das letzte Kommando, 1973; Long Raiders, 1980; Tage des Donners, 1990; Independence Day, 1996), Colm Meaney (Die Commitments, 1991; Der Engländer, der auf einen Hügel stieg und von einem Berg herunter kam, 1995; Star Trek: The next generation, TV-Serie 1987 - 94; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, TV-Serie 1993 - 1999), Orla Brady (Sturmhöhe, 1998; Jesse Stone: Totgeschwiegen, 2006; Sindbad, TV-Serie 2012; The Cop - Crime Scene Paris, TV-Serie 2013), Zoe Wanamaker (Heißer Verdacht, 1991; David Copperfield, 1996; Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen, 2001; My week with Marilyn, 2011), Caroline Carver (Alone, 2001; Von Hitlers Schergen gehetzt, 2004; Hitlers Vollstrecker, 2012; Shame the devil, 2013), sowie Roger Daltrey (Frontmann von "The Who") oder auch Daniel Betts. Der amerikanische Geschäftsmann Jack Woods (Randy Quaid - der ältere Bruder von Dennis Quaid) kommt nach Irland, um sich nach Land umzusehen, das sein Arbeitgeber weiter verwerten könnte, gibt sich jedoch vordergründig als amerikanischer Tourist aus, um ungestört seiner Arbeit nachgehen zu können. Schon bald lernt er den Kobold Seamus Muldoon (Cola Meaney) und dessen Frau Mary (Zoe Wanamaker) sowie deren Sohn Mickey (Daniel Betts) kennen, die ihn in die verborgene Welt der Kobolde, Feen und Elfen einweihen. Während sich die Feen um die Natur kümmern, treiben die Kobolde hingegen gerne Schabernack und streiten sich am liebsten mit den verhassten Schlossfeen. Schon seit Ewigkeiten gibt es kleine Reibereien zwischen den Völkern, aber einen Krieg darf es nie geben, so hat es die Große Banshee – Herrin über alle magischen Wesen – beschlossen. Als sich jedoch Mickey beim Feenball ins Schloss einschleicht und sich unsterblich in die Prinzessin Jessica (Caroline Carver) verliebt und mit dieser schließlich flieht, spitzt sich der Streit zwischen den Kobolden und Feen zu und mündet schließlich in einen Krieg. Jack, der sich währenddessen in Kathleen (Orla Brody) unsterblich verliebt hat, kämpft um seine Liebe, da diese hinter den wahren Grund seines Aufenthaltes gekommen ist, und sich hintergangen fühlt. Doch mit dem Ausbruch des Krieges zwischen den Feen und den Kobolden hat die Natur angefangen sich zu verändern und bedroht nun das Leben alles Lebewesen auf der Erde, da die Natur selbst stirbt. Nun müssen Jack und Kathleen sich zusammenraufen um nicht nur den Krieg zwischen den Feen und Kobolden zu beenden, sondern auch um die Natur zu retten sowie der unmöglichen Liebe zwischen Mickey und Jessica eine Chance zu geben. John Henderson hat seine Geschichte mit sehr stimmungsvollen Bildern erzählt und entwickelt dabei viel Sympathien für seine Protagonisten. Der Song "Fly away" gesungen von Emma Townshend trägt mit seinem eingängigen Sound ebenfalls viel dazu bei, die positive Stimmung des Films zu transportieren. So vergehen die knapp 3 Stunden wie im Flug und man verfolgt voller Begeisterung das sympathische Spiel der Schauspieler, wobei beide Liebesgeschichten schön inszeniert und erzählt sind. Die Special Effects sind gut gemacht, wenn man auch bedenken sollte, daß dies eine TV Produktion ist, die bereits über 15 Jahre alt ist. Die DVD von Koch Media ist recht gut, hat jedoch ein paar kleine Schwächen. Das Bild im Originalformat 4:3 ist technisch fehlerfrei und nicht zu beanstanden. Jedoch der Abspann läuft auf beiden Scheiben etwas ruckelig durch. Als Sprachoptionen gibt es Deutsch und Englisch, jeweils im Format Dolby Digital 5.1 was sehr gut verständlich ist. Untertitel liegen keine vor. Als Extras gibt es ein Making-of Featurette, welches jedoch nur auf Englisch ist und ohne Untertitel. Dazu gibt es noch den Original Trailer (ebenfalls in Englisch), sowie einen weiteren Trailer (Arabian Nights, auch in Englisch). Darüber hinaus hat Koch Media seiner Veröffentlichung noch ein Wendecover ohne den FSK Flatschen spendiert. Trotz dieser kleinen Schwächen möchte ich dennoch fünf Sterne vergeben, da ich dieses Fantasy Märchen einfach hinreißend schön empfand.

A marvelous movie, a love story between the rude American and the romantic Irish woman, a tribute to the leprechauns and elves and the banshee, great roles of Colm Meany, Roger Daltrey, Whoopi Goldberg, ... A must-see !!!!!

One of my favorite movies and was so happy to find it on Amazon. If you love stories about Fairies and Leprechauns then this is the movie for you.
