A fun end to the trilogy
This book brings together all of the threads from the previous two books to an exciting climax. The writing was a little smoother than the last book, which seemed a little forced at times. This time around, things seem to flow much more naturally. My one complaint is how the children keep surviving against overwhelmingly bad odds. You'd expect someone would suffer fatal consequences sooner or later. But seeing as these are kids' books, perhaps that's excusable. The kids I read it too were a little doubtful of that, but they enjoyed it nonetheless.Without giving away the plot, I can say that there's lots of action, with some surprise heroes and surprise foes. All of the children from this series and the previous series get involved with the action, making for a pretty busy story! The end of the book makes it relatively clear that there won't be more stories about these kids (including the original) but that there are plenty of other "faerie" tales to be told. I think that might be a fresh avenue to take, as these kids are turning from wondering children to jaded faerie veterans. The artwork, as usual, is excellent and abundant, and the level of reading is about right for 8-10 year olds (precocious younger readers, as well as older readers, will also enjoy it). The chapters are a little longer it seems, which makes it a bit tougher to read in small bits, but that's a minor complaint. Overall then, I found this was a fun and fitting end to the series, and I strongly recommend it for fans of Spiderwick, or children's fantasy in general.
