good pre-diabetes cookbook
This is a good pre-diabetes cookbook. The book includes helpful information about nutrition and managing pre-diabetes; for example, the author explains how it is important to get enough protein spread over a day. You can only absorb so much protein at a time, and, if you don’t get enough protein at breakfast, you can’t make it up later in the day. I didn’t know this. The recipes use whole foods, and can be made in 30 minutes or less; they contain easily obtained ingredients, many of which you might already have. There is a variety of recipes to suit a variety of tastes. The recipes are dishes your whole family can enjoy. A nutritional chart is included with each recipe. The dessert recipes call for sugar substitutes – stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol and the author discusses reducing sugar in the recipes you already own and use. Even if you don’t want to use artificial sweeteners, I think the rest of the book is still worthwhile. Of course, if you find out that you are pre-diabetic, the first thing you should do is to meet with a dietician who can help you make a plan. But after that, this book provides good information and recipes to help you manage, and maybe even reverse, pre-diabetes.

Easy recipes that taste great
This is a great book for me. I'm not a very good cook and am not attracted to recipes with a long list of ingredients and complicated instructions. Most of these recipes are simple and with a short list of ingredients I already have or normally purchase. There are a few staples I didn't have (stevia, flaxseed meal and protein powder), but since they show up in multiple recipes, my new staples get a lot of mileage. I've now made several things (mostly breakfasts to start with) and have loved every one of them. I think the key to starting a new basic diet is to focus on just one or two meals at first instead of trying to buy ingredients for multiple dishes at once. After looking through the book (pictures are truly worth a thousand words!), I've made a list of dishes to try and will gradually work my way through them all. I also love that each recipe shows nutritional information that includes protein grams -- I always look at that number first, as I've been given a daily target number of protein grams to aim for, so I have a goal for each meal. Calories next! This book is one of the most helpful purchases I've made in recent months.
