The bar looks dry and chalky — is this normal?

Yes. This is a sign of proper curing. The coating is a natural part of the drying process. After your first use, the bar transforms.

How is this different from regular soap from the supermarket?

Commercial soap contains artificial fragrance and preservatives. Al-Jamal is made from olive oil, water and lye. The lye is fully consumed during the saponification process, what remains is pure olive oil soap, sodium olivate and glycerin.

Why does Al-Jamal soap sometimes take longer to lather?

Keep using the soap until it lathers. The soap does not have artifical foaming agents like other commercial soaps. It cleans the sweat and dirt first, before producing the lather. The eventual lather is a sign the skin is clean.
