I saw your question here before I placed my order. I was disappointed the previous reply did not actually answer your question. Since my bar stool seats' measurements match yours I can give you and anyone else who may be looking for a cover for a seat 17" in diameter and 2" thick a definitive answer that the 18" cover is the correct size to order! The 18" covers fit my stools perfectly!

Q: I want to cover the 15 1/2" seats to an outdoor steel set that has no padding. Is there any padding to these covers?

Basically, there is no padding. I used these seat covers on padded stools but I wanted more padding.....so I cut out circular carpet padding which you could probably layer according to your needs. Hope this helps !!

Q: Are these machine washable?

I do not know ! However, since it is a faux leather material and also waterproof I would not put it in the washing machine. Mine are black so I dont see any stains on them. I dont know what a stain on red would look like. When my black covers get greasy I wipe them down with soapy water, then plain water. and pat dry. Grease stains disappear on my black covers. Hope this helps !!
