Planet Bike Superflash Stealth Bike Tail Light

BEST LIGHT TAIL LIGHT
I've tried other taillight systems, and this by-far is the best. The Planet Bike Superflash Stealth Bike Tail Light is bright visible at long distances. Furthermore, the irregular flash interval is alluring to the naked eye. The irregular flash interval helps Veh Drivers to remain aware of your presence.

It mounts on the seat stay, but I don't like the light
The mounting options are better than the common silicone strap mounts, and this one will mount to the seat stay, which is what I need.I really don't like the light itself though. It's painfully bright if you happen to be in the narrow beam angle, but if you're not in the beam angle then it's very dim. I suspect the ideal is that it's really bright for cars that are behind you, which is fine, but cars are often not directly behind, in which case this light is barely visible. And it can be quite annoying to cyclists behind you if they get in the beam angle. My preference is the other extreme: lots of area that's lit up so it's visible from all angles but not laser sharp and painful at any angle.I returned it.

Twinkley Winkly Blinkly
Live in Tampa where bicycles are an endangered transportation mode. Survival depends on being seen and this is an essential part of the kit.Like the intense, focused beam & the attention grabbing flash pattern. Got it for my wife's commuter. It is 1 of 3 tail lights on her bike. It blinks brightly enough for daytime use.I use a PB Blinkey 7 that has a red case & reflector and 7 LED's. Blinkey 7 is suitable for dawn, dusk & night time but lacks the focused intensity of the SuperflashLike the Superflash's suitability for daytime in flash mode.Like the 2 triple A bty's that power it. I use eneloop Nimh's. I go 40+ hours of commuting using my Blinkey 7, mostly in blink mode, between recharges. While the light will burn much longer than 40 hours, these lights do gradually diminish in intensity as the bty's discharge. I expect the Superflash will not have quite as long a burn time but will burn longer than LiPo, USB rechargeable units.Dislike that light does not come with rack mounting brackets/ hardware.Dislike that attention to the clip release, located on the mount bracket, is required to avoid losing the light. The plastic release clip can deform to a position that will allow the light to work its way out of the mount. I have used rubber bands made from old inner tubes (they have to be cut thin and replaced frequently) to hold the light securely to the mount.

Perfect cost to function in my book. You can spend more, but why?
These blinky lights from Planet Bike are pretty good for the price. I always buy planet bike tail lights because I already have the mounts on all my bikes and I can just move them from one bike to the next. I usually have 3 or 4 going around at any given time. They use standard alkaline batteries and last a good long while; LEDs don't use much power. I commute to work every day and these will usually last me 5 years before I need to replace them, the one's I've replaced were all because the switch started becoming a pain in the butt to work. I assume it's from the long term effects of moisture. This light differs from the others I've bought in that the switch is easier to use so maybe I won't have the same problem. Either way, 5 years is pretty reasonable. They have two settings: steady on or blinking. The blinking will get anyone's attention and is plenty bright (almost too bright - but not), I often use the blinking setting when riding in the city just as extra attention getting device for all the stressed out drivers! If you want to spend more money you can get USB rechargeable tail lights that I'm sure are really great but I just don't see the point, I use rechargeable AAAs and rarely ever have to change them out. Good value. BTW; their other, cheaper tail lights use the same mount and work really well too, maybe just don't look quite as sleek.

Great light, with one flaw
I just placed an order for my fourth (yes, 4th!) of these lights. How many do I currently possess (not counting the one I just ordered?) Zero. But I do own four back shells and clamp sets! This is a well designed and made, extremely reliable, very bright taillight. It is conservative on batteries, and runs well on NiMH. The switch is reliable, and battery holders are well designed so the batteries don't fall out or jiggle - so no taillight failures when bouncing through potholes. Easily seen from 2 or 3 blocks away. That said, there is one big negative - which is why I have four back shells and zero blinkies: With just the right bump or jar, the light and battery assembly is prone to falling off the back shell, from which it is supposed to separate only when pried off with a coin. I have lost four lights this way (three purchased, and one provided gratis by Planet Bike when I called and complained about the problem.) Usually I notice when the light falls off, and can pull over and run out in the road to retrieve the light before it gets run over - but not always. (That's called "unsafe safety device retrieval!") My new light will have a modification before it goes on the road: I'm going to drill a hole through from front to back and hold the light to the back shell with a long screw and wing nut.
