Very good for Airfix.
Yes ,a pretty good kit. Very thick plastic, good fit though, would be hard to bust it. But further into building it the main flight deck was a pig to fit. The hangar bulkheads were too high, had to cut them down a touch. Then the starboard side was wide, had to pull it in with rubber bands. A struggle, but worth it in the end, because it is a great looking ship. Liked the information booklet too. Well done Airfix

Model seems well made and parts fit well but the build instructions are poor and colouring instructions are dreadful and in some cases totally misleading.

Exceptional
For years I've built kits by all the brands you can think of. I started with Airfix, back when the series four warships cost less than four pounds. I've always wanted more Royal Navy ship kits, and until now the best were the KGV and the Repulse. They might still be the best battleship and battlecruiser kits, but now the best warship kit produced by Airfix is the Illustrious. How long have I wanted a large scale kit of an Invincible class carrier? Before, only the 1/700 Dragon/Revell kits were available. Now something better has arrived. The detail is excellent, easily up to the 1/350 Tamiya kits. In fact, put the Illustrious in this scale with their modern Iowa class and Enterprise and you have one hell of a display. But I digress. The flight deck is depicted below the flight deck, which is a nice touch. The kit goes together well, the instructions are clear and painting instructions excellent. The decals similarly have everything you need. One quibble is that for the price of the kit you shouldn't have to buy additional kit with more Harriers, etc. in it. But as I said, that's a minor point. But this kit and build a ship which may soon leave RN service. Note to Airfix; bring out the Invincible and Ark Royal please. Plus, type 42, type 22, 23 and any other modern RN kits. Thinking out loud, wouldn't Fearless look great in 1/350?

a Piece of History
I have a weakness for model kits that are based on naval vessels, but all to often the kits end up on the small side.I read a lot f reviews before taking the plunge, and can say it is one of the best kits I have ever seen, the detailing is fantastic but still leaves more to add if you are a serious modeller / modder. The only minor gripe I have is the somewhat limited painting instructions and somewaht small amountr of paint provided.

Fabulous
Incredibly detailed kit, also 65cm long, so quite large. You will need the patience of a saint for the decals which can be the size of a pin head. You will need tweezers. I upgraded to enamel paints, those included are rubbish and simply not enough to do a decent job, so factor this into the overall cost. Very good model

on the whole a good model to build
It was a good model to build The markings (transfers)on the flight deck were to many and to small.and where were the Port and Starboard lights.the rule at night green to green red to red perfect safety come ahead???

Royal Navy HMS Illustrious
The detail in this kit is fantastic. There are absolutely no compromises - every bit of the model that can be seen - even bits that would need an endoscope to see - are modeled accurately.ditched the glue supplied and used humbrol liquid poly cementThe instructions are very clear and easy to follow, and the decals, however tiny, stayed together even after I'd dropped them on the floor. I would guess that the amount of paint supplied is sufficient
