Arcam irDAC II Fernbedienbarer USB D/A Converter with Headphone Amplifier and Bluetooth Atpx 24bit/384kHz DSD

What a dac! I have Literally had it 4 hours and I’m in hifi love. I’m using it to convert the digital optical output of the Chromecast audio to analog streaming Spotify premium to my Croft acoustics tube integrated amplifier using QED reference cables. I’m using the new Dali opticon 1 speakers, my set up is by no means high end but it’s mid fi I guess. The sound is so juicy I feel I want bite into it, wonderful low end, clear vocals with a top end that in no way irritates. I’m sure as the unit runs in the sound may change slightly if you believe in any of that as I do. All in all an absolute steal at £300.

As another reviewer has noted, the headphone amp is not really on a par with the rest of the contents. To my ears, it sounded harsh and over-analytical. *However* this could be down to the rest of my equipment and personal taste. I got a valve headphone amp and fed the signal from the Arcam into that and my system now sounds stellar in its quality. I cannot really fault the irDAC-II - it does a superb job. I'm sure (as with all hi-fi) that if I spent more money I could get something better, but I would think I'd have to spend a *lot* more to get a significant improvement. I can only judge this from listening to components from a (richer) friend's system, which cost a lot more, but frankly didn't offer any improvements on the DAC front. I would say that this is a safe bet to buy. If the headphone thing is an issue, then there's your excuse for your next spending spree.

Not a bad DAC although in typical Arcam style it doesn't work smoothly universally with all devices. I plugged a popular Android box into this for USB audio and was very frustrated to hear crackles and all I can describe as 'digital noise' in and amongst the sounds. So I thought perhaps instead i should use the optical output instead. This time the music, whilst more tolerable would drop out every 5 seconds or so and then come back. Couldn't believe it. Lots of research later I updated the firmware on the box to 1.92 which essentially improved the defects to a more tolerable level but I couldn't believe it. So I get my trust ir DAC (older version) and plugged that in and USB audio worked flawlessly. I then connected this DAC to another leading Android box and USB audio worked flawlessly. Strange. So in summary, don't think this will work with all equipment and configurations. I get the feeling that Arcams next DAC will be a little more tolerant but be warned! Otherwise sounds good.

Good clarity and soundstage but lacks dynamics.

I bought this 2 years ago from Sevenoaks for full retail price (£399). The sound quality is great and user interface and remote control work well, but the problem is that certain sources that work fine on other DACs cause this DAC to glitch out, with the sound cutting out for a fraction of a second every few seconds. I've read a few other reviews saying the same thing. This is inexcusable for such and expensive piece of equipment. The sources I've found to be incompatible are an Apple Airport Express and a 10-year-old Samsung TV. I've also found a brand new LG TV to have occasional glitches. Sources I've found to work well; Sony Blu ray players, old Apple TV with optical out.

This is a great DAC. I am using it via coaxial and optical connections with the variable output going directly into a power amplifier. The overall sound is full, natural, detailed and musical. The digital preamplifier works better than expected. This DAC really makes digital files and streaming sound richer and enjoyable (even internet radio stations). I haven't used the Bluetooth connection or headphone output as yet and do not really intend to so I cannot comment here. Great value for money and excellent sound quality. Highly recommended at this price.

Great sound quality - big improvement over using the in-device DACs. I play all my digital audio devices through it so multiple input options very useful - I use them all! Two outputs also good - I connect the fixed output to my main tv/sound system, and the variable output to my active computer speakers.

This is an excellent product. Astonishing value. The ease of use, versatility remote control a daisy. Sound Quality was really revealing even on CD's. Like listening to my collection all over again. H.recommended. Karl O'Neill.

Habe dieses Gerät als Nachfolger des ArCam AirDac gekauft. Der Klang ist hervorragend und überbietet den AirDAC den ich vorher hatte noch einmal. Das Gerät ist gut verarbeitet und einfach zu bedienen. Den Kopfhörerklang habe ich nicht getestet weil ich das Gerät nur über meine Lautsprecher geniesse. Es gibt eine wahnsinnige Bandbreite von Angeboten bei DA-Wandlern und ich habe mittlerweile den Vierten. Für diesen Preis gibt es ein sehr guten Klang und eine gute Verarbeitung.

Un excelente producto, de gran calidad y, sobre todo, buen sonido. Lo he utilizado hasta ahora solamente como DAC, a través de RCA SPDIF y su sonido es excelente en toda la gama de frecuencias. Aparejado con amplificador integrado de bulbos produce un sonido fuerte, claro, musical, con buena separación de instrumentos y timbres reales. Lo recomiendo ampliamente, para mejorar su calidad habría que gastar mínimo el doble o triple.

Il pacco contenente il iRDAC II e altri oggetti è arrivato la scorsa settimana a tre giorni dall’acquisto. Mi è stata offerta la prova Amazon Prime per un mese e l’ho accettata. Vediamo poi se confermare il Prime al termine della prova. La confezione del DAC, in cartoncino azzurro, aveva il lato quello per l’apertura un po’ grattato, come se fosse stato passato su una piano o un pavimento grezzo. All’interno comunque tutto appariva intonso. Per oltre un anno ho avuto il DAC iRDAC , quello della versione precedente, ancora in commercio anche se fuori produzione. Ho scelto di passare a questa nuova versione per alcune caratteristiche particolari secondo me molto utili: - Connessione Bluetooth per collegare il DAC a smartphone, mac, pc - Uscita cuffie (utilissima, nella versione precedente mancava) - Compatibilità con i nuovi formati audio HD (384 kHz, DSD128) - Uscita analogica a volume fisso - Uscita analogica con il controllo del segnale in uscita (la versione precedente aveva i pulsanti +\- sul telecomando ma si attivava soltanto con l’amplificatore ARCAM) - Telecomando leggermente più robusto e carino - USB II senza la necessita di selezione manuale (nella precedente versione c’è un selettore del formato I\II - segnale audio jitter free (quasi) - DAC ESS Sabre L’alimentatore in dotazione è sempre quello a muro che alcuni definiscono “per rasoio elettrico”. Si tratta di un alimentatore switching abbastanza economico, anche se fa il suo dovere. Ovunque in rete si decanta il miglioramento della resa audio dell’iRDAC sostituendo l’alimentatore con uno lineare a basso ripple, da almeno 2 A - 12 V. Chi lo ha fatto afferma di ottenere una maggiore estensione della gamma audio, neri più profondi, e bassi più presenti. In commercio ce ne sono molti, alcuni dedicati all’iRDAC, ma costano all’incirca 200\300 euro. Non mi sembra una piccola spesa e per questo ho chiesto consiglio all’assistenza ARCAM. Secondo loro, i benefici che si ottengono non giustificano la spesa. Nella confezione ci sono anche il telecomando abbastanza semplice ma efficace. Poi ci sono una serie di cavi, uno per l’uscita stereo analogica, un cavo ottico e un cavo usb A\B. Si tratta di cavi piuttosto economici ed è bene dotarsi di cavi hi-end in quanto il DAC è la sorgente audio dell’impianto per cui questi “dettagli” fanno la differenza, tra un ascolto di livello e uno appena soddisfacente. E’ ovviamente importante il resto della catena: l’amplificatore, i diffusori e i cavi di potenza. E’ necessario caricare sul pc l’applicazione ARCAM e i driver per Windows, disponibili nel sito di ARCAM.co.uk. I CD con il software forniti in dotazione sono ovviamente superati. E’ sufficiente collegarsi al sito del fornitore per trovare le ultime versioni disponibili. Il tutto è abbastanza intuitivo, comunque oltre ai vari forum nel sito ARCAM c’è il file pdf FAQ che contiene vari suggerimenti per l’installazione dei driver e l’impostazione delle uscite audio. Come player ho scelto Foobar, con i suoi driver WASAPI, lo trovare in rete basta googlare. E’ gratuito e molto performante. Ho utilizzato il DAC collegato al notebook tramite il cavo USB A\B WireWorld Starlight 7 lungo un metro e l’ho trovato molto performante, se il pc è ben configurato. Secondo me è il modo migliore pe rsfruttare appieno le caratteristiche del iRDAC. Aspetto non secondario sono i file audio utilizzati. Personalmente ho rippato tutti I miei CD, originali, oltre 200, in formato wav lossless senza perdite a 44 kHz/16 bit. Il suono che si ottiene con il dac è molto buono, ma il vero salto (anche dalla sedia) si fa ascoltando i file in HD, da 192 kHz in su campionati a 24 bit e i DSD. Non si recuperano facilmente, nemmeno volendoli acquistare in quanto ci sono delle restrizioni per l’acquisto dall’Italia. Per prima cosa ho scaricato il file sample da HDTracks.com., e garantisco l’effetto “wow” . Con questi supporti il iRADC da veramente il meglio di sé e lo si può veramente apprezzare fino in fondo. Mi sento di suggerire a chi possiede tanta musica rippata in formato mp3, in particolare se a bassa risoluzione, di tenerli in considerazione soltanto se non è possibile ottenere gli stessi brani in formati più adatti alla qualità del iRDAC quali wav, FLAC, e i nuovi DSD senza perdite. Mi riferisco ai formati della sfera Windows in quanto non conosco i Mac e dintorni. In questa categoria di prezzo posso consigliare iRDAC ARCAM in quanto è un prodotto veramente ben fatto, raffinato, ci fa entrare nel mondo della musica liquida dall’ingresso principale. PS: il mio è arrivato guasto e l’ho dovuto restituire. La connessione BT non viene vista da nessuno dei miei smartphone Android e nemmeno dal notebook windows 10. Da notare che per far riconoscere la periferica è necessario attivare la procedura di pairing premendo i pulsanti dei due ingressi optical 1+optical2 per 3 secondi. E' spiegato a pag. 16 del manuale. Es increíble cómo cambia el sonido digital del iPhone o del iPad a formato analógico dandole separación y profundidad. 100% recomendable
