A great Red Sea companion
This is an excellent guide book to the fauna of the Red Sea and covers everything from very large to small species. Some of the photographs are better than others, but generally the standard is good, a few with a blue cast. There is a very wide representation of species and with a book like this you are not going to get everything. For example, there is a photograph of each shark species and a few paragraphs of text. It is not going to give you a full identification guide to each species with 17 photos from different angles. That isn't the purpose of the book. Having said that, with most of the species the i.d. is great from the pics and the text. All in all, this is the ideal guide to the species of the Red Sea in as compact a format as you could wish for. Printed on glossy art. Recommended.

Fantastic book (albeit dated)
The best book for identification in the Red Sea and surrounding. A few species are missing but that’s about it. Most images are perfect to identify with and while the descriptions are not consistent and sometimes unclear or lack crucial bits of information, this is the best book out there for the region.

Just a bit disappointed.
Well, I have read all the rave reviews about this book, and maybe my expectations were too high because of this? It may be the most complete guide for the Red Sea, but there are just too many photos that are far from excellent. My criticism is restricted to the fish part, as I think the other parts are quite fine. That is also why I still give it four stars (three and a half would be more appropriate actually). Five for the non-fish parts, and only three for the extensive fish section. Sure, there are many fine photos, but many are low contrast, blue water with blue fish when the fish should be silvery. I'm sure with modern equipment, many species could be shown better. Also, I think a number of pictures are such that identification is not easily verified. A case in point is the Red-Sea Fusilier on page 107. Looks like the fish up front is swallowing a smaller fish? But the typical head shape of the fusilier is no longer there because of it. The black and white tail pattern can be seen in this picture, but the appearance of it is so dull that one wonders why this common fish did not get a more typical illustration. I have not had the book when I was in the area, but I bought it afterwards to try to identify several species that I remember well enough. Some fish had a proboscis-like elongation. The only one in the book with that shape is the Indian Bird Wrasse on page 158. But the ones I saw had either a red-orange seam of fins, or in case of the larger ones a greenish one. Neither of these color patterns are visible nor mentioned. But since the book is certainly not omitting a relatively common species, I must conclude that I saw this species, despite the fact that nothing reminds me of it except for the shape. There are more problems. Many fish that had a very typical appearance I simply can't find. Presumably young versions that are often not shown?

Red Sea Guide
I was recently in the Red Sea and was without a proper guide to marine life. Needless to say, this book is fantastic. Great pictures and descriptions of marine life and an invaluable and essential companion for any read sea trip.

My go to reference guide - excellent!
I have a vast reference Library to suit my varied hobbies one of which is underwater photography specifically of, yes you guessed it! coral reefs! This is my go to first book, it covers fish, reptiles, mammals, invertebrates and marine plants and whilst no publication can feature everything, it tries. Beautiful clear photographs accompany the descriptions, assisting you in identifying what you have seen on your dives. Sections on Geology, Conservation, Dive sites, Dangerous Marine Life to watch out for and so much more.

Comprehensive and well-detailled
There are no better book than this one! It is comprehensive and includes so many pictures of underwater species of all types (fish, moray, snakes, corals, anemone, etc). Detailed explanation and good quality pictures does the trick for me. Only thing that may put off some is that it is a bit old.

Good Guide
If like me you scuba dive in the Red Sea, this book is a must have item. I purchased into take with eons liveaboard diving trip. After each dive, I was able to use the book to identify the fish, animal and coral seen during the dive. It does appear to be a favourite book amongst Red Sea divers and understandably so.

A great help!
It is the perfect book if you want to know what you looked at after a dive in the red sea. I want to set up my aquarium as a nano red sea and it is perfect to identify the corals/fish that I need in the tank. The book is very clear and with a lot of pictures. Perfect!
