WEN Cordless Electric Chainsaw, 16-Inch Brushless with 40V Max 4Ah Battery and Charger (40417)

I"ve had two gas operated chainsaws and two ION electrics. Of the four, this one is the best. My gas operated chain saw is now officially retired. Gas, gas storage, mixing gas, pulling starting handles to start, complexity of the gas engine...and now emerges the ION electric with comparable power. Why this chain saw?: Lightweight, excellent power for my jobs, safe bar, does not leak chain oil, uses Oregon bar and replacement chains, super instruction manual. I have about 1/2 acre of Palo Verde and Mesquite trees. If you know these desert dwellers, they grow every which direction and have hard wood. So I was skeptical at first. No longer. Sufficient power and battery life to do the job. I think I used 1/4 battery power to do about an hour's work cutting limbs 8" diameter and less. Now, please pay attention: These tools are dangerous! You need to READ THE MANUAL (excellent manual) and watch a few YouTube videos on chainsaw safety before using these puppies. PLEASE do so. I had one mishap in my chainsaw career that only resulted in some cactus thorns in my backside (ouch!) and sent me to those manuals and YouTubes -- profit by my experience. PLEASE. OK. Now I read other reviews before buying this Wen product. I agree that it does not leak chain oil. Another electric I had did, so I appreciate this. And it saves oil. Cool! Then someone said the stock chain has fewer links than a replacement Oregon product. I think so. I've attached a photo so you can see -- the Oregon is at the bottom. Uses S56 Oregon replacement chains. I bought a couple of them but haven't had the need to use them yet. But I like to be "at the ready." Old Army training. Next there was mention that the saw takes a second of so to activate after squeezing the trigger. True, but you adapt to that and not worth taking even 1/2 a star from the rating for that minor inconvenience. So, bottom-line, I highly recommend this electric battery chainsaw as an excellent value for the money. Spend more if you like, but this one is well made, works well, doesn't leak oil and has power to spare. Now one closing tip, my Amazon friends, on the power deal. Ohm's Law (I am an engineer by education, but only dabbled in electrical engineering): when you're evaluating chainsaws for power, do this: multiply the Volts of the battery times the Ah (Ampere-hours) of the battery. The result is the Watt-hours of power. The more the better. Don't be fooled by low Ah and high Volts. Just multiply the two and wha-la = POWER. Enjoy! Be safe!! READ THE MANUAL. For this review id like to compare the WEN to the equivalent Greenworks cordless chainsaw. The WEN was excellent in its performance and read on to see why a comparison is warranted. We wanted a cordless chainsaw for the occasional felled log clearing across 4x4 trails. We needed something that did not leak oil as we carry it in the back of the Jeep. For this purpose I purchased the WEN 16" Cordless Chainsaw shortly have using the equivalent Greenworks 16" cordless chainsaw. I chose the WEN as the reviews were notable for lack of any issues with chain oil leakage which is a very important quality for me since Ill be carrying it in the back of a Jeep. Within 5 minutes of the Greenworks oil reservoir fill ,the entire contents leaked out the bottom forming a puddle on the work bench and covering the battery and battery compartment. Shockingly, according the the Greenworks phone support this is normal.......how absurd! -- WEN HAS NO NO OIL LEAKS!: In contrast the WEN after filling its oil reservoir and after a short usage was bone dry. With the reservoir full we turned the saw upside down and saw no leaks out of the closed filling cap. We then set the saw down overnight on a white cloth and in the morning saw no evidence of dripping or leakage. Nice job WEN. -- GREAT CUT: As for cutting I was very very pleased with how fast and how smooth the WEN cut in a 10" diameter birch log. See the attached video as we saw through this log. -- LOUD: The WEN is not as loud as a gas chain saw but still very loud. We measured 105db. Thats is the same as outboard motor or power lawn mower. After 8 hrs of exposure to this level hearing loss begins to set in. So for continuous use sound reducing ear muffs are still recommended. -- EASY TO ASSEMBLE: The saw comes packaged in a compact tight package and you need to assemble. Very easy to do with the good instructions and pictures provided. The saw requires no tools to tighten the chain when needed. -- COMFORTABLE TO HOLD: well balanced and comfortable to hold. -- GREAT VALUE: At the time of this review, the WEN was a good $65 less then the Greenworks. Ill update the review after some use keeping an eye on battery life. Nice saw and I look forward to my first trail clearing.

Yes! I was skeptical. Chainsaw - battery??? - reliable??? - Cuts??? - Powerful??? Yes to all. I could not be happier with this product. Am I a lumberjack? No! Am I cutting two foot dia trees with a 16" saw? No! Am I keeping 2 acres of saplings, brush, up to 8" limbs trimmed and tidy? Yes! Does this product excel with these chores? Yes! Battery lasts long enough to tire me out.... I'm 75+ and got tired of yank'n the cord, buying the gas n' oil and wondering if the poulan was gonna start. Now - ain't got that worry. The Wen starts right on time... easy load battery... saw has some weight so not flimsy but not overly heavy either. Well balanced. The chain/blade that came with it got dull pretty fast so get the extras. Chain - change is pretty quick - pay attention to direction of cutters.... All in All - an A+++ from me on this product. Will update if necessary. Happy trimming.....

Purchased for casual wood cutting away from electrical outlets, such as on a trail. Arrived well packaged, with the bar and chain (both Oregon) separately included and needing assembly. Directions didn't say anything about initial assembly, but the directions for replacing the chain, were good enough. After charging, tried it out on the trail, moving through dead-fall. I was pleasantly surprised! This saw was able to munch through fallen logs well over 1 foot in diameter with ease, and also of course remove branches. Cut after cut, with a new sharp blade, this saw worked well with softwood (pine, spruce, aspen). The chain tightening mechanism works well. It is not "automatic" but requires no tools. After that we cut some firewood, maybe a dozen or so pieces. I was down to 1/2 battery, and so was the saw :). The bottom line is the battery lasted longer than I did. Recharging takes a couple hours. One odd thing, the saw doesn't start right up when you release the safety latch and press the trigger. There is a noticeable delay, every time, of about 1 second before the saw actually switches on. I didn't find anything in the manual describing that behavior. Like every chain saw I've ever used, this one drools some bar oil when idle, so don't be surprised if it leaves a puddle in storage. So far, this saw outperforms my expectations of a battery operated chainsaw. It comes with a 4 amp-hour battery and charger. It comes with a chain-guard sleeve. Spare batteries are over-pricey, which is a disappointment. It uses Oregon chains and bars, which is a plus.

Update: After almost 6 years, this saw is still going strong. Just used it with an 18 inch bar to drop a couple of large Norway maples. Other than the chain oiler leaking down if I leave oil in it, no complaints. Uses A041 tail mount bars. Bottom line up front: This is an excellent, high performance saw at a very reasonable price. Build quality is much better than expected for a lesser-known tool company. Battery life is more than adequate, and the saw cuts quite large trees with very little effort. Also, it's very quiet with comparable performance to a gas powered mid-range model. Unless you're professionally logging, this should be all you need. The only reason I dropped a star for value is because a spare/replacement 4Ah battery costs about 2/3 of the tool with battery, and although I'm contemplating upgrading my aging Black and Decker 20V yard tools to some of the other WEN 40V yard tools, they only come with that 2Ah battery (except the mower, which I don't need). I bought this chainsaw in response to a giant tree of heaven that fell from my property onto my neighbors after our last big storm. The tree was probably about 40-50 feet long, with several 12" or so thick trunks. I charged the battery fully before use, and spent approximately 10 minutes setting up the saw and adding oil, in no rush whatever. Super easy, and although not necessary for me, it came with one of the best-written manuals I've seen in a while for an inexpensive tool. I took it out back the following morning (today) and proceeded to chop over half the mangled mess of tree into manageable firewood lengths in about an hour. The saw easily took less effort and time to operate than moving the wood. The battery read half charge by the time I cleared the 30 or so feet that I was removing from the neighbors lawn and decided to call it quits. Very satisfied with my purchase so far. Side note: doesn't quite have the same effect as the gas powered models when you chase people around with it. Oh well.

I have been using this for the last three months. I am really impressed with it. I cut lots of firewood every year. I live on 5+ acres with lots of pine trees. I use my big gas saws for most of it, but this little saw is great for cutting small rounds and limbs. It is way Lighter than my 16” gas saw and nice and quiet. I like using this very much. I have two batteries. When one battery goes dead I put it in the charger and grab my other battery. The battery charges pretty fast. I like how the battery is not so bulky like the other battery chainsaws that I have used. The bar tensioner is really good as well and easy to use without tools. That is a big plus. Chain stays on the bar without falling off like most battery chainsaws that I have used. There is a hesitation when trigger is pressed. Takes a little bit to get used to, but I have started to like it. I think it’s a safety thing. Nice little saw.

I have been a fan of Wen's electric woodworking tools for quite sometime. I have been interested, but skeptical about battery powered tools and how they perform. I have always been a fan of Husqvarna gas saws, but decided to give a Wen battery saw a try. I limbed a couple of trees with it and it performed very well, so I decided to move up to downing trees. This is when i was really impressed. First I cut down an 18" diameter 60' tall southern yellow pine. As you can see in the picture the cut was not perfect due to the length of the blade, but I could have done a better job lining up the cut. It felled this tree with no problems. I then proceeded to cut the tree into 10' lengths. After that I still had 3 out of 4 bars of capacity left on the battery. This was impressive! So, I then cut down a 14" red oak tree that was about 40' tall. After felling it I cut it into 3 sections and removed all the limbs. At this point I could tell it was getting weaker. I was down to one bar on the battery. This was impressive. I had no idea that it would perform this well. Granted, it doesn't cut as fast as a gas saw, but if need be, it can get the job done. Since the above test, I have used it exclusively to cut small trees and to remove limbs off large ones. It is so nice to use the battery operated saw; no mixing oil/gas, no having to pull on a rope every time I crank it, plus it is much lighter than my gas saws. Overall, for the price and quality performance, I don't think you can go wrong with one of these saws. I do quite a bit cutting around my farm and have a lot of experience with chainsaws. One thing that applies with gas or battery powered saws, you do need to keep the blade sharp. I touch up the blade with a file between battery changes and it cuts great.

I'm a tool nut, I have every kind of saw imaginable. I have 6 or 7 chainsaws and this is my favorite. I bought my Wen saw in 2019 and the original battery and saw still run great (6 years as of this review)! I still use a big Stihl for felling large oaks, but most of the time I use the Wen. I heat our house and two workshops with wood so I cut a lot every year. The Wen runs a long time on the battery but it can't cut a load of wood. My favorite method is to take the Wen and a backup saw in case I get it stuck. I cut the wood into 4' to 8' lengths and fill the bed of my truck. When I get home I put a saw buck at the end of the tailgate and cut the logs to size off the back of the truck with a corded saw running on a 50' 12 gauge extension cord. No fumes, very little noise and I don't have a saw idling or needing to be restarted all the time. The oiler seems to work well but I carry a squeeze bottle and give the chain a little extra oil occasionally. If you keep a sharp well oiled chain on it the saw is plenty powerful, even for osage orange/hedge.
