Unreliable.
Used this to try and find an open/broken wire somewhere between the front of the car and brake lights. Connected the transmitter as instructed then started tracing with the receiver's probe. The tone is not constant and varies in volume which makes it impossible to determine where the break is.I initially checked the device using a separate 12v battery and a length of single core cable. I worked with that, maintaining a constant loud tone until the end of the wire. The tone then reduced considerably and disappeared not far off the end of the wire.It looks to be fine with a single wire run but doesn't handle a loom with a bundle of cables. That rather defeats the object when most vehicles have multicore cable runs and not single wires.The concept is good but a failure in practice.
