how long does it take to grow?

Mine took a few months to really get established and growing good. It sprouted in a couple weeks.

I have an indoor Bonsai, can I sprinkle this on the earth around the tree, and just let it grow?

In theory it might, but if you read the reviews you will find that like me, pretty much no one has been able to grow the moss. I would save you money and see if you can find some nice moss in your yard.

I want to mix this with buttermilk and paint on rocks but i live in so calif so i'm thinking that it probably won't work?

I have this growing in a controlled environment, it's fairly temperamental. You're better to find local moss in your area, and use that instead.

What zones will this successfully grow outside?

Kyoto, if I am not mistaken, is zone 6/7. So it should be OK in areas like that. It did not grow for us in zone 5, but maybe the reason was not cold, but some other factors.
