What is thia attachment, can't work out what its for ?

This part is a holder of additional equipment. It goes in drivers side dashboard bellow air vent.

what is it for and where does it go?

It is the backing plate that screws into the dashboard. Either side of radio. You can then fit the accesory clips / phone holder etc… to that. Rather than just a round blanking plate.
