Great book!
I love this vocab book! It has multiple pages for the same words so you can continue to use the book each day throughout the week for the same words. If you don't want to, you don't have to create additional pages or games to create more content to increase repetition. The book presents the words in many different ways, for example sometimes it asks what the synonym is for a word, and the child has to choose the correct vocabulary word. Or it might as for the antonym, or describe the word. It might put it into a list of other various words and ask which one doesn't belong etc. Very nicely done workbook for vocabulary and my son always came away understanding the meanings.

A good foundation
So glad I purchased these. Before I came across this book, my kids tried the word ladder books. While interesting in concept the word ladders miss out on three things that this vocab workbook does well. 1). It gives a single word meaning to the listed words - this helps kids remember definitions quicker 2). There are at least three exercises for the same set of words; it allows the kids to apply the meanings in separate settings and registers the words in their mind. 3). It provides context to the words so they can be used correctly. In addition to the vocab books, I also have a spelling city account. After the kids practice two to three sets of words in this book, I create some fun exercises in spelling city with the same set of words that the kids practice throughout the week. After combining these two mediums, I have seen a remarkable improvement in my children's vocabulary.

Good books to have
I have the grades 3, 4, and 5. All are excellent, as they start out with each word and then build up the complexity of the skill needed to finish the problem. There are matching problems, fill in the blanks, and also puzzles to do, based on the word. All are short so are not boring. I think they help build up the child's vocabulary.

Overall recommended
The book provides an effective way for kids to expand vocabulary. Most of the questions and test designs are rather satisfying while a small portion of them are not reasonable (two words could both make sense in a context while the answer just approves one)

An excellent learning aide
This was purchased for my granddaughter, who lives in Japan and whose primary language is Japanese. She has been using this to improve her English vocabulary and reading and it has been very helpful.

These lessons can be used to teach many skills.
I am a private tutor, and I have used these vocabulary books with many students. They are useful not only for teaching vocabulary, but for many other skills students will need to complete their schoolwork, such as using context clues and following directions. Since the activities vary from one lesson to the next, I can use them to teach strategies for different school tasks, such as crossword puzzles, sorting, webs, etc.

This particular edition was lackluster for the learning goals I was looking for
I'll put you this way mediocre kind of says not great not terrible insofar as a study guide to help get your kid up to the grade level they're going into. Scholastic has a traditional good history of producing good publications, maybe the next edition they can amp it up a little and make it more valuable for the learning experience you're going for
