what is the size of these book darts?

When your question came in, I happened to have a micrometer next to my desk, so I can be (excessively, probably) precise about this.The Book Dart I measured was 0.387 inches wide, 1.027 inches long, 0.021 inches thick at the exposed (folded) end, and the metal they are made of is 0.004 inches thick. So, when you use them, the tip of the arrow will be about 1 inch in from the edge of the page, and when the book is closed, you'll see a 0.387 inch long by 0.021 inch wide bit of metal visible.I've used them for years to mark key passages in books without marring the pages, and I just ordered a fresh tin this year.

Does the tin's lid actually screw on, or just sit precariously?

The top slides on and it’s a tight fit. It may so tight that it’s air tight and forms a vacuum when you pull on it. In that case drill a VERY tiny hole (1/64 inch) in the middle of the bottom. To vent the box. That will help when opening and closing the box.  If it’s still to tight to open properly, I suggest using compressed air (no higher than 30psi) and use short burst around the seem where the top and bottom meet. That should start to break it free so you can wiggle it back and forth as you pull them apart.

After it’s open, put a VERY THIN coat of silicone lubricant on the two mating surfaces. By VERY THIN I mean just enough to leave a finger print. Then work the lid on slowly and squarely twisting it back and forth until it’s completely closed. Then take it off the same way; twisting it back and forth as you push or pull. Once you work it a few times it should be ok. Remember to denier that little hole you drilled. God bless.

If you take the book somewhere, does the dart stay on tightly?

Yes, the bookdarts will remain indefinitely on the page.  When I finish reading a book I normally leave the dart in the book for future use. The only problem is with older books say before say 1960 the pages are much thicker so the darts don't slip on as easily as with modern books where the paper is thinner and smoother.  I hope this helps.  I my opinion one of the greatest inventions since sliced bread ;-)

Question 4

How do you open the tin? I know that it is not a screw top but I can't get the top off!

I purchased two of these separately from different suppliers. One of the tins arrived damaged. Perhaps a heavy box was placed on the padded envelope that the tin was shipped in because on one side, the lid was squashed down past the extended edge on the bottom that the lid is supposed to rest on. It will NOT open. However, i contacted customer service and will receive a refund. (The seller says it’s a risk free transaction in the item details.)
