Useful tool to understand how alcohol impacts your body
This is an interesting device that can be helpful to put concrete numbers to the impact that alcoholic beverages has on your body. We've all heard of 0.08% BAC limits (which may vary by jurisdiction), and there are reference formulas for how a standard drink should affect you based on your body weight - but a full breathalyzer is a much more accurate tool for understanding how it personally impacts you.Let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first. This should not be used as an entertainment device: the goal is not to run up the number and see how drunk you can get. On the other end, this should also not be used to give you a 'free pass' for doing things while intoxicated: if you measure as exactly 0.07%, that doesn't mean you're magically safe to get behind the wheel and drive. Be responsible - the only safe concentration for driving is 0.0%.That said, I've often wondered how my body reacts over the course of an evening of drinking. I'll often go out for a multi-course meal, and if I have a cocktail beforehand, I've always been curious how long it takes to clear that through my system. I'm typically feeling normal again by the time the meal is over, but being able to actually quantify that was attractive. This device works well, as far as I can tell... but I have some doubts about accuracy. I haven't calibrated it against any other breathalyzers, but the numbers seemed a bit higher than I was expecting: at a point when calculators said I should have been well below 0.06%, I actually measured at more than double at 0.13%. That would normally have implied "drinking an entire bottle of wine", with major impairment - but I'd only had two standard drinks and was just feeling slightly relaxed, so that level is pretty improbable for my weight and intoxication level. I did wait a while after my last sip, but perhaps not long enough - or perhaps some element of the meal I was also consuming threw off the reading? The physical design is quite nice - it's compact, with lots of interchangeable cleanable mouthpieces and an easy charging port. The screen is also quite clear, and lights up different colors depending on your intoxication level. The case it comes in is also pretty elegant. One interesting thing I wasn't aware of is that alcohol gas sensors have a limited lifespan - you can only use this breathalyzer for 2500 uses before it expires. It actually has a countdown timer onscreen that tracks the number of uses, to help you stay conscious of this limitation. I appreciated that touch. So due to the accuracy questions, I'm approaching this as a 'novelty', not as a device I'd trust to make safety decisions around. You should too - it will help you compare various alcohol levels with each other, but you shouldn't use it as a free pass to make risky decisions. It should only be used to help you be more careful than you were otherwise planning, and if you approach it in that light, it could be a useful tool.

Simple to use.
ACCURACYMy test was to fully consume one 9.5 ABV beer, wait 15 minutes, and then check BAC with device. At my weight my BAC should have been somewhere between 0.015 and 0.025. A photo is attached of the result(s).The first reading I took returned a 0.08 BAC which was too far out of range to be accurate. But I learned from another breathalyzer that sometimes these sensors need to cycle a few times after they've been sitting for an extended period of time. Second test, 5 minutes later that I forgot to photograph, returned a value of 0.01 BAC which is in range.COMPETITOR COMPARISONWhen I was testing this device I was also simultaneously testing three others from different brands. So I'll mention something I think this specific breathalyzer did better than the others, and something I think it lacked in.--What it did better: The mouthpiece port is covered by a cap and the cap is a flip top. So the internal sensor stays protected if you're carrying this device around without its case, and you don't have to worry about a removeable cap getting lost. Best design for the mouthpiece port out of all the breathalyzers I tested.--What it came up short on: The screen background changes color based on reading (green, yellow, red). And that's near but I found the green and yellow screens just a bit hard to read outdoors in daylight.WHY IM USING THISThe onset effect of rising blood alcohol content (BAC) is the stimulant phase where we feel an increased level of energy and self confidence, we're sociable and perhaps even euphoric. We refer to this as the buzzed state. As we consume more and our BAC rises we move into the depressant state where fatigue sets in, our speech slurs, and balance diminishes. We refer to this as being drunk. For most people in the range of average weight the line between these two states is a BAC of approximately 0.055. The further one's BAC moves past this threshold the more diminished the buzzed state and the stronger the drunken state becomes.Your preferences are your own but I personally like to camp out in the buzzed zone, I don't want to become drunk. And honestly this is really the only reason I'd carry a device like this breathalyzer. I don't need a gadget to tell me when I've become too intoxicated to drive, the effects of such are quite clear. Therefore I don't personally see huge value in something like this keeping me "safe". But helping me stay in that feel-good zone so that I can enjoy myself socially, yes, this is where a device like this shines for me.

Precautionary tool
I actually purchased this for the family. Whenever we do family get togethers, there's always endless servings of alcohol and they flow nonstop. I thought this device will serve as a safety precaution.I'm not sure how accurate these types of equipment are since I don't drink alcohol so I've never used one. But for the family's sake I certainly hope that the readings from this is as close to accurate, if not 100% accurate.

super easy to use.
We played with this last weekend and it seemed to be working well. I can't speak to the accuracy since I don't have anything to compare it to, However, it did give results that seemed to be appropriate. Sober people blew 0.00, drinkers blew something above 0.01. Values went down after they had dinner, and back up after having another drink after dinner. Its super simple to use. just turn it on, wait for the 15 seconds to finish counting down, then you need to blow into the mouthpiece for at least 5 of the next 10 seconds.
