Waistband is thick but not tight, knee is tapered and I would say true to size. I’m 5’2” and weigh 165. I got an XL and they fit perfect. Note though if you’re getting black shorts, they have white pockets, which is ridiculous but still they are cute.

will these cover the belly button?

It depends how long your rise is. I have a pair in white, size Large and the rise is approximately 11.5". That goes well over my belly button but I have a very short rise.

is white fabric thick enough to not see underwear

Yes if you wear white. I returned mine because the legs weren’t tapered enough for me.

Can these go in the Dryer?

I did wash these shorts in cold water and put them in dryer on low heat. They did not shrink.
