Get Rid of Your Accent book
The book itself was in good condition and the content is fine, in itself. However, the CDs that were originally in the book were not included, and for a book on pronunciation with worked examples from the authors, this was a bit pointless!

A foundation pronunciation gymnasium for ESOL students..... but not for the faint-hearted or for the babies!
I have been using this book for about a year with serious adult students. My students are generally seeking to improve their English for career reasons.... and are usually studying intensively for three months or more, sometimes less.Because of timetabling issues, pronunciation as a standalone option takes place over 2 80-minute sessions, back-to-back once a week. Not ideal, of course!A significant number of students use the IOS app.Using the book as a 'pronunciation gymnasium' (i.e. intensive, repeated exercises), progress can be seen for most, if not all students. The students are almost always very pleased with the course, although, for a small number, it's too intensive (too much like hard work!).We follow a fairly strict method, based on the book. The advantages:1). Sharpening up pronuciation of individual sounds2). Dealing with specific pronuciation difficulties peculiar to certain languages ('w' for Turkish, etc)3). Developing the ability to lengthen long vowels and shorten the short weak vowels4). Developing and strengthening the ability to hear with discrimination (since we never look at the text until we have practised intensively sounds, words and sentences)5). Developing the ability to memorise by ear6). Expanding vocabulary7). Strengthening spelling. The book is not perfect.... and the comments of other reviewers about intonation, tone, connected speech, etc, are not without merit. It's also true that the choice of vocabulary and practice sentences in Part One is not always ideal. Sometimes a little abstruse, sometimes a little too literary, sometimes a little 'precious'.However, perhaps 80% of my students are really really happy (although the course is tough). And I can see discernable progress. So, all in all, I am delighted and would love to recommend it as a (demanding) foundation course.

Misleading Information
The description features 2CDs but apparently the new version I've got is not even supposed to have them inside. Had to buy the recordings somewhere else to make use of the book.

Definitely helps improve your accent!
I am a Polish woman teaching in a British school and have always been concerned about how my students perceive me. I am only half way through the 'Get rid of your accent' book and was delighted that someone recently praised me on my good pronunciation - that never happened before during my 13 year stay in the UK! This book definitely helps, although it certainly requires fair amount of commitment.I work through it by trying to learn most of the example sentences and short poems by heart while driving to work and then aim for repeating them aloud several times throughout the day. I have already made several 'discoveries' of everyday words pronunced quite differently than I thought they are.I am sure anybody who speaks English as their second language can improve (even if just a little bit) their accent by using this book!

Great Stuff
I purchased the item about a month ago. The book is accompanied with two audio CDs. When I first looked at it, it looked too simple ... but don't let yourself misdirected due to the simple graphics. I have to say that THIS IS A GREAT STUFF.If you want to have fun, consequent, all-round practise of the Standard British English (RP), this is the tool! The actors on the CD are brilliant! The sound is built up very accurately: you start from the sound, then you practise words, then sentences and - in the last exercise - you have the opportunity to see a poem (!) filled with the specific sound. And this set of exercises takes no longer than a few minutes!I can honestly recommend it.oliveR

Get rid of your accent
A good book for beginners or those ones who self-study English, like myself. It really helped me to realise what mistakes I have been making. I don't think you will get rid of your accent just by studying this book, but you should definitely improve your English pronunciation.

Get rid of your accent
I haven't used the book enough in my work as a TEFL teacher to rate it the full five stars, but it seems to work OK with my pupils on the couple of occasions I have used it.

Also improves listening ability
I've been using this book with my students here in Brazil. They comment that they now find it easier to understand spoken English too. As a result, I try to do the book with any student facing an exam testing their listening.
