What an improvement over the old H1!
I had a Zoom H1 (older model) that I used for years. It was an incredible workhorse. But early this year, I put fresh batteries in it, clicked the power button and nothing...So I ordered one of the newer H1n models. For a hundred dollars (thereabouts) you simply cannot find a better recording device. You can tuck this into a shirt pocket and take it virtually anywhere. the X-Y pattern on the built-in microphones is excellent, but they are somewhat prone to picking up noises transmitted through the body of the recorder.I use a pair of Rode Video Micro Pro microphones with it for recording live musical events. The mic input is a stereo input and with the proper cable, these, along with the H1n make incredible recordings. The only "drawback" I see with the H1n is it is only rated to support a 32 gigabyte micro-SD card. I put drawback in quotes because a 32 gig card still provides over 14 hours of recording time at 48k/24 bit. If you record at the highest quality MP3 rate of 320k, the allowed recording jumps to over 100 hours. What I especially like about the H1n over the older H1 is that the controls are now much more readily seen and changed. The old H1 was pretty sparse, so you really had to memorize procedures in order to set the recorder up as you wanted it. This has a much better display and more buttons, which simplify changing settings. The headphone output sounds as though it has higher output than the older H1.But the meat of the matter is the recordings and in that category, it is simply excellent. For a recorder that's not much bigger than a candy bar, it's awesome.
