Works really well for coloured pencils, pastel pencils, graphite etc.

I am an artist and needed something that would cope with all thicknesses of pencils and all types, well, im delighted to state that upto this moment in time it is exceeding all my expectations. Works a treat.Sharpens to a fine point and stops when it is sharp enough and you can also turn the little knob thingy clockwise to sharpen to a blunter point (anti clockwise for sharp point)Large capacity tray to collect the scrapings.Doesn't feel like cheap plastic so all in all,.a good buy ...Let's hope I havnt jinxed myself !

Over priced and overrated - and now in the bin

Just edited this review downwards. I have thrown it in the bin. it is now breaking all the points off the pencils rendering them useless for the type of work I do. I have removed the sharpening unit to see if there is a point from an old pencil stuck inside but I can't see one. I cleaned dust off with old paintbrush sharpened it several times with graphite pencils to no avail. I'm trying to do a painting to enter in a competition and have had enough of this rubbish. now ordering another make. Save your money if using pastel and cp pencils.Bought this because of reviews and description. My old lyra metal crank handle sharpener finally gave up the ghost after 10 years of sharpening pastel, graphite and coloured pencils. This Swordfish was £17.00 at the time of purchase but I thought it would be a good investment as I would use it a lot.First disappointment was on opening the box to discover it was not only plastic but shabbily made as well. It felt loose and flimsy. However as long as it sharpened OK I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I do wish I had not. The pencils did sharpen to a point but not as good as the lyra. And yes I did alter the adjustment to give the sharpest point. Turning the handle was wobbly and when finishing the sharpening there was always a little bit of pencil wood sticking to it. Sadly I had persevered with it for too long and could not return it. I see it is now much cheaper and can understand why. I am looking for another sharpener now, but it won't be from Swordfish

An excellent sharpener for coloured pencil artists at a great price.

This is an excellent sharpener for the price and one that I recommend to new pencil artists. Previously I had the Derwent Superpoint which had the edge in terms of point taper (nice long thin point) but gave up on me after 12 months of use. This is my second Swordfish and was purchased so that I could have two - one at home and one to take on the road when travelling. Both are still like new. They are well made and simple to use. The adjustable feed means that you can sharpen the point frequently and lightly, saving on pencil wastage. The only thing I would like to see is a version that produces that super point beloved of us pencil artists.

Mostly a good sharpener

OK, so this is a great sharpener that does its job well.....BUT it is a little awkward getting the pencils in and if you have to sharpen a lot at one time it can become a little painful with the way you have to put the pencil in. Its asking your fingers to do more than they should whereas most helical sharpeners you can pull the chamber out, let go and put the pencil in and then sharpen. With this one you have to hold on to everything to put the pencil in so can be a little awkward. But definitely gets my pencils to a sharp point and you can adjust the sharpness it will go to with a little twisty knob at the end

Superb

I have only had this sharpener for a short time, but so far it has put terrific points on Prismacolor Premium, Faber's Polycromos, Conte a Paris Pastel Pencils, Koh i Noor's triangular pencils, their large Magic pencils and Pastel Pencils + various types of pencils from Lyra, Staedtler and Derwent. It put a superb point on all of them, very quickly and without any breakages.I didn't have to use the clamp provided to attach it to my laptray - I simply loaded the pencil into it and held it down by placing my left hand on the top while I turned the handle with my right - it has a non-slip base and it feels very stable when I'm doing that.It has a small red screw on the handle that can be turned right for a blunt point or left for a long sharp point. There is a large box to catch shavings which is easy to slide out to empty and I believe you can easily get replacement blades for it though I don't think this will be necessary for some time.I really cannot fault this sharpener - Swordfish have done it again!

sword fish omnipoint pencil sharpener

I have purchased three of these sharpeners and at first they worked very well. After a short time however they were unable to give ne a sharp point on my pencils and were of little use. I obeyed the instructions to clean it, but this made no difference. I purchases a replacement thinking perhaps I had done something wrong but the problem repeated itself no matter what I did. This product is no good and I would like a refund

Snaps coloured pencil leads

Wanted a large shaving-compartment pencil sharpener that would fit Polychromos/Caran D'Ache Luminance pencils (those awkwardly-sized ones that are slightly too big for a traditional sharpener), as well as some other large-barrel pencil brands. This sharpener consistently snapped off the pencil tip, despite much trial and error with changing the length of the tip, not over-sharpening, etc etc. Does the same to cheaper Crayola coloured pencils as well. Also seems to sharpen in a slightly strange shape, more oval than circular, which leads to a flattened oval point as opposed to a round point. It seems to cope ok with standard graphite pencils, but didn't achieve a better point on those than any other type of cheap sharpener.Overall, it's not the cheapest sharpener so it's disappointing it only copes with graphite pencils.

Great for pastel pencils! See pic.

A great solution to a major frustration! This sharpener is a gentle giant. In the photo attached, the top nine pencils are Stabilo Carb Othello pastel pencils, the bottom six are Conte a Paris pastel pencils. The lovely result acheived, as shown in the photo, is not even the sharpest setting. The Swordfish OmniPoint sharpened both entire sets beautifully, with the exception of one pencil which was defective. It out-performed all the expensive hand sharpeners I have, and did far better than any blade I've tried. Despite a lot of practice and care taken, even the blades often break off tips. Yes, I did try the blades with these two sets before the Swordfish arrived in the mail. It left all other types in the dust! Hurrah! A sharpener that really really works well on PASTEL PENCILS. So happy.Helpful tip: I sharpen a solid graphite pencil (break off the point if necessary) after sharpening a batch of pastel pencils. Doing so helps clean the cutter and lubricates it, too, helping the cutter blade stay sharp and the sharpener working smoothly. As with most tools, it will benefit from this regular maintenance and will last much longer.

Goes Dull after sharpening pastel pencils

Wouldn't it be nice to find a sharpen for pastel pencils that actually works and doesn't dull immediately? I'm sick of using a blade to whittle. I had high hopes for this sharpener as it came highly recommended by another pastel artist. And it worked great the first 15 times but then quickly dulled and won't sharpen - not even regular graphite pencils now. Wasted $25.
