Understanding PDA: For Kids & Grown Ups

A simple yet clever book about PDA
At surface level this book is very simple and easy to read. But for those who understand PDA, there are so many layers.I thought it was clever how the author managed to include some complex ideas in a really simple, and accessible way. The scenarios, the emotions, how people perceive our children versus what is going on inside their minds, the way our children mask, the way that demands can build, how the environment and the way people react can affect them… as well as how people react to our children and the strain this places on relationships. It also provided insight into different ways that our children can avoid demands, rather than just focusing on the external ‘explosions’ that many people associate with PDA.Then it showed how our children can be supported and most importantly expressed how every autistic person is an individual.People don’t understand our autistic kids, let alone those who have the PDA profile.I hope this helps some people to ask questions and educate themselves more.

Great for the whole family
A very well-written and thought-out book. Lovely simple pictures and text that shows the author really understands the complexity of PDA. Great for parents/carers to read with their children to help open up discussions about everyday family life moments that can be tricky for everyone to navigate. The book gently offers some suggestions of things that may work for other families too. Hope there will be more, this will make a great series!

Helped my kiddo and the family
My kiddo is really resistant to the idea that she's "different" or struggles in some areas more than her peers. We sat down together as a family for our first read through of this book, and I think it helped her really feel like she's not alone and that there are so many other kids with similar struggles, and that there's not anything "wrong" with her....she just has some extra challenges and we have to find ways to work with that. She was calmer and happier for several days after reading this and seeing herself in the pages. And it was a helpful introduction/overview for the grandparents, who sometimes struggle with our daughter's behaviors and responses, as well as the ways we sometimes need to interact differently with her, since they were raised in different times where kids were simply expected to respond to adults in specific ways. I really appreciate that this resource is available for families like ours.
