cut and installed the M-D replacement top piece and it fit and works great! I installed the magnetic side piece on the ...
I purchased the M-D Building Products 1610 Steel Door Magnetic Weatherstrip for my Castlegate / Premdor front door for my house. The house was built in 1999 and we are the original owners. The door came with two side compression weatherstrips and a magnetic top weatherstrip. The existing weatherstrip has lost its elasticity and is now leaving gaps on the lock side. Recently, the existing top piece has fallen out of its slot a couple of times.I measured, cut and installed the M-D replacement top piece and it fit and works great! I installed the magnetic side piece on the lock/knob side of the door jam and it left a fairly wide gap. I believe this happened because the door did not come with a magnetic weatherstrip on that side originally and the gap is a little too large for the magnetic weatherstrip to seal. I don’t fault the M-D weatherstripping for the gap – it is for a different setup. I replaced the magnetic strip with the compression one in the kit intended for the hinge side of the door and it seals great! As I close the door it now needs a little pressure to lock the deadbolt and no light or air is coming through. This is how it was when the house was new. I did not replace the hinge-side door weatherstrip because the existing one seems to still provide a tight seal and I only have the one compression weatherstrip that comes with this kit that I used for the lock side.I am giving this product five stars because it fits the slot the weatherstrip slides into perfectly, seals the door like it is brand new and appears to be made of very high quality materials. I trimmed the weatherstripping to fit my door and really tugged and twisted the extra material to see how strong it is. I wasn’t able to damage it by hand. I don’t blame M-D Building Products for the lock-side magnetic strip not working in my application because the house didn’t originally come with one and I took a chance ordering this product knowing that. I am going to order another set for the door that goes to the garage.

Just what I needed.
I had to replace a seal at my mothers house and this worked perfectly. No tools required but a putty knife helps. Seems like good quality. Time will tell.

Box about 8 feet but NECESSARY!
The major complaint by most folks is when a seller folds the magnetic strip in half to ship it loses its ability to seal against your metal door where it was bent. Because this is sent on a long narrow box, it arrives in good condition and not bent.SEE My Photo. the contents and the box are side by side on my concrete carport.I have metal doors on all of my home entry doors. I am a big fan of magnetic weather stripping.Pro's:- If your door is not even top to bottom (side with knob and latch) the magnetic strip will still grip the door and give you an even seal. Will it grip the door if your door is way off / warped jamb? probably not. If that's the case, you need to have a carpenter come out and rework the door jamb. I find the magnet to be as good quality as the one that came with my door when we built this home.- I like it that the strip is one long piece so there is no break in the strip. Some others I looked at come in pieces.- Just simply insert in the slot where the old strip was and cut with scissors where it meets the very bottom of your door jamb.- Also Comes with magnetic strip for top of door and compression strip for hinge side of door. Just trim with scissors for custom fit.- If you need something for the bottom of your door, this isn't it, that's a different style seal.Con's:- Because of the long odd shape it must be shipped in, the shipping fee is a bit high. In my situation, I live in the country and can't drive to town and back for less than the shipping fee. So that shipping fee becomes a Pro in my book. The con is that the box could easily be bent by the shipper which would ruin it. If it arrives bent, send it back!I am reluctant to give it 5 stars because a skeptical person may think I'm 'in it for the company' who makes them but in reality, I am a farmer in the country. So it is an honest 5 stars.

sun light showing through weather seal
I bought the beige seal and when the sun hits the door light comes through the weather seal making it look like a bad seal. I was wondering if dark brown or black would keep the light out. I dont like seeing light all aroun d the door.
